Ellaister's LairYour emails are welcome, send all emails to wolfs_baine(at)hotmail(dot)com (please put the reason for the email in the subject line) December 16 Christmas againA few truths on Christmas: 1. Winter festivals have always been apart of the cultures of humanity, and the Christian Christmas is no different; Well, it is different since the Christians wiped out the older holidays that made up their winter festivals and replaced it with Christmas in hope of converting pagans to Christianity. Very under-handed indeed. 2. The deities Ishtar, Sol Invictus and Mithras all shared their “birthdays” on December 25th and they all had various celebration due to this fact. 3. Saturnalia, a celebration to the Roman deity Saturn, was a feast that was held around the 17th of December and lasted until the 23rd or beyond. 4. The celebration of “The birthday of the unconquered sun god”, Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, was held on December 25th and celebrated the sun deities of different cultures. This was primarily celebrated in Rome. 5. The winter Solstice was called Bruma, and was celebrated as the day that the “Sun god proved to be unconquered”, despite the shortening o the daylight hours. 6. Yule is the celebration where Yule logs were lit in honor of Thor, a Norse deity of thunder, with the belief that each spark from the fire would represent new born cattle for the following spring. 7. The Christmas tree: The Christmas tree is often explained as a Christianization of the ancient pagan idea that the evergreen tree represents a celebration of the renewal of life. In Roman mosaics from what is today Tunisia, showing the mythic triumphant return from India of the Greek god of wine and male fertility, Dionysus (dubbed by some modern scholars as a life-death-rebirth deity), the god carries a tapering coniferous tree. Medieval legends, nevertheless, tended to concentrate more on the miraculous "flowering" of trees at Christmastime. A branch of flowering Glastonbury thorn is still sent annually for the Queen's Christmas table in the United Kingdom. Among early Germanic tribes the Yule tradition was celebrated by sacrificing male animals, and slaves, by suspending them on the branches of trees. According to Adam of Bremen, in Scandinavia the pagan kings sacrificed nine males of each species at the sacred groves every ninth year. According to one legend, Saint Boniface attempted to introduce the idea of trinity to the pagan tribes using the cone-shaped evergreen trees because of their triangular appearance. The modern customs can trace its origins to 16th century Germany: Ingeborg Weber-Keller (Marburg professor of European ethnology) identified as the earliest reference a Bremen guild chronicle of 1570 which reports how a small fir was decorated with apples, nuts, dates, pretzels and paper flowers, and erected in the guild-house, for the benefit of the guild members' children, who collected the dainties on Christmas day. Another early reference is from Basel, where the Taylor apprentices carried around town a tree decorated with apples and cheese in 1597. During the 17th century, the custom entered family homes. One Strasbourg priest, Johann Konrad Dannerhauer, complains about the custom as distracting from the word of God. By the early 18th century, the custom had become common in towns of the upper Rhineland, but it had not yet spread to rural areas. Wax candles are attested from the late 18th century. The Christmas tree remained confined to the upper Rhineland for a relatively long time. It was regarded as a Protestant custom by the Catholic majority along the lower Rhine, and was spread there only by Prussian officials who were moved there in the wake of the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In the early 19th century, the custom became popular among the nobility and spread to royal courts as far as Russia. Princess Henrietta von Nassau-Weilburg introduced the Christmas tree to Vienna in 1816, and the custom spread across Austria in the following years. In France, the first Christmas tree was introduced in 1840 by the duchess of Orleans. In Britain, the Christmas tree was introduced by King George III's German Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, but did not spread much beyond the royal family until the royal family Christmas centered round Prince Albert at Osborne House was illustrated in English magazines, and copied in the United States at Christmas 1850 (illustration, left). Such patriotic prints of the British royal family at Christmas celebrations helped popularize the Christmas tree in Britain and among the anglophile American upper class. 8. The Christmas Ham: The Christmas Ham is an ancient traditional ingredient in the Scandinavian Christmas celebration (Yule) and remains as important as the Christmas tree. Before the arrival of Christianity, a pig was sacrificed to the god Freyr at the Yule celebrations and eaten (look up Elven Blót). This tradition of butchering a pig at Christmas continued after the Christianization and survives as several dishes (sausages and bread dipped in pork fat) of which the Christmas ham is the most central. Among commoners, the Christmas ham was usually saved for the summer, whereas more wealthy people ate it at Christmas. Actually I don't believe I need to go on, you should get the picture. So to everyone out there who is not Christian, celebrate your holidays and reclaim them! To those who are Christian, think what this holiday truly means and were it truly comes from. It did not originate with your religion nor does it have anything to do with your myth deity-man Jesus. Christmas is the product of forced conversion, theft, and lies; perfect for any family! Happy holidays. December 09 Historical problems with the Census of Quirnius in LukeThe Census of Quirinius has always been my favorite argument against the historical accuracy of the Christian bible. In the book of Luke (2: 1-7) it is described that around the birth of myth deity-man Jesus, Caesar Augustus decreed that the whole world would be registered (meaning his Roman Empire, of course). It is said that the first registration was taken while Publius Sulpicius Quirinius was governor of Syria. It then tells us that all went to their own towns, this could mean home towns or birth towns or ancestors towns (it is still debated on over the meaning). So Joseph, being a descendant of David (we are told this, at least), went from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to a city called Bethlehem. The problem of the town lies in the author telling us Josephs ancestry and because of his ancestry he had to leave his home town and travel to Bethlehem in Judea. The above tells us, and rather plainly, that this tax involved the individuals ancestry and where they were registered. Moving on. You will notice that I underlined the word "first" when saying this was the first registration and that it was taken by Quirinius. I did this because there are records of 3 major census' being taken during the reign of Augustus, 28 B.C.E, 8 B.C.E, and C.E. 14. So, the very first census would have to be in 28 B.C.E or earlier. The earliest such provincial census was taken in Gaul in 27 B.C.E, the imposition of the census provoked disturbances and resistance. Keep that in mind. Josephus records that a census was taken at that time, in Syria, around 6 or 7 C.E. after the exile of Herod the Greats successor Herod Archelaus. From this we can safely place the birth of the myth deity-man Jesus at around 6 or 7 C.E. (for those who do not know the Before Common Era and Common Era acronyms, that would be 6 or 7 A.D). I will let that sink in. Now if Luke is true, then this places the book of Matthew in a difficult spot for it places the birth of the myth deity-man Jesus at the time of Herod the Great (2: 16-18), who died in 4 B.C.E, ten years earlier. The verses in Matthew tell of Herod the Great issuing a massacre of the innocents, a rather famous event that most likely did not happen. I will get into that n another post. Back the the census. In addition to all this, no other sources mention a Roman-wide census of this type (to include all peoples); the censuses carried out by Augustus were of Roman citizens only, not every person living in the region. Most modern scholars agree that this is an error on the part of the author of the Luke, concluding that he created a literary fiction in order to place the birth of the myth deity-man Jesus in Bethlehem, unaware or indifferent to the chronological difficulty it presents. The excuses given by those who will always give them are as follows: 1. An earlier census was carried out, or begun, during the reign of King Herod the Great. The above could have happened but it still does not answer the problems of Quirinius, who is mentioned by name, being governor of Syria and carrying out the census. Quirinius was not governor of Syria until after the banishment of Herod Archelaus in 6 C.E. The two were never in power at the same time (Quirinius was governor of other ares, such as Crete and Cyrene in 14 B.C.E. In 12 B.C.E he was named consul of Rome and in 6 B.C.E. h was sent to govern Pamphylia-Galatia. After Pamphylia-Galatia he served as a chief adviser to Augustus' grandson Gaius Caesar, until he died from wounds suffered on a campaign. 2. That Josephus must be mistaken. I find this ridiculous! If he is mistaken on a simple matter of governorship then all his works would be thrown into question. This would also create more problems for Christians for they use Josephus as the main source to the historicity of the myth deity-man Jesus. 3. The texts were mistranslated. If this is true then how can you be certain that the rest of the Christian bible is true and correctly translated? 4. There is a ten year gap between Herod the Great and Quirinius in Luke. This would help the Christians but it would throw the book of Luke off. The author is very specific. Here are some of my main points again: 1. Nothing is known in history of a general census by Augustus; 2. I n a Roman census Joseph would not have had to travel to Bethlehem, and Mary would not have to travel at all; 3. No Roman census would have been made in Judea during the reign of Herod; 4. Josephus records no such census, and it would have been a notable innovation; 5. Quirinius was not governor of Syria until long after the reign of Herod. You be the judge. November 19 The party at homeI can't believe I forgot all about this! Here is a story of when I first arrived back in my hometown. My parents threw a "Welcome back" party and invited many people I knew and a few that I did not. As the night drew on most were outside by the fire pit, just talking, while three women and myself sat around the dinner table debating illegal immigration and such. I do not remember the exact conversation but something sparked my mother to say something about the god-man myth Jesus. She immediately looked at me and said "And I don't want to hear anything out of you on Jesus!" I honestly had no intention of bringing anyone into a debate about religion but it would seem my mother did. Well, all the women turned and looked at me while one asked "What does that mean?" My mother tried to explain to them that I was some sort of Agnostic, which I quickly corrected her and announced that I was an Atheist and I explained what an Atheist was. One woman was in complete denial. "But you believe in something." She would state, to which I would reply "When it comes to deities and the supernatural, no." Like most closed minded beings she could not understand my position nor could she accept it. She would continuously say I did believe in something but I would always give her the same reply. The other woman asked me "So how do you think we all got here?" Challenging me and looking at me as if she could thwart any attempt I made at explaining my position. I told her that I had no idea how everything started and gave her the few theories that I did know of and my own problems with them. I then told her that if her question was how we, as human beings, reached this state that the theory of Evolution was sufficient explanation. Here is where the story gets quite comical. She grabbed my arm and looked me straight in the eye, she was very serious, and said "You know that Evolution has been disproved, right?" I was astounded! I asked who told her this and of course her answer was her preacher. I asked what her preacher’s background was in biology and science and she said there was none that she knew of. How ridiculous can you get! For one of the first times in my life I was truly at a loss for words. This was the prime example of how people will believe anything and how dangerous the religious could be. Well I corrected her in her ignorance and informed her of the current debates and the transition species that have been found that fully support the theory of Evolution. Of course, she would not listen. After that bit of comedy they moved on to the Christian bible. They were a bit taken aback to learn that I cold recite whole passages from memory (probably better than their loony preachers) and that I could say what would have been happening historically in that time. They also seemed taken aback at my knowledge of all the different sects of Christianity as well as other religions and their "holy" books. One woman commented "How can you disbelieve if you know so much." I smiled and shook my head, replying "It is because of all that I have learned that I lack a belief in deities." They then wanted to know of my wife and the beliefs in Japan. They wanted to know how I would coup with a Buddhist. I assured them that Lisa was no Buddhist, but an Agnostic Traditionalist. I then told them how most Japanese are Agnostic Traditionalists, so we never “butt heads" on this issue. Of course they wanted to know why the Japanese place offering in front of their stone images and why they worshiped idols. This issue right here usually angers me for it show the willful ignorance of most religious people when it comes to other religions. After explaining that falsehood and shutting down the conversation when pointing out they all have "idols" they worship we moved on to the stereotypes of religions. One woman actually made the comment "Christianity is better then Islam because no one kills in the name of Jesus like they kill in the name of Allah." Yes, this is what she said!! I am sure you can guess what I brought up in light of this and how it shut the conversation down once again. This little conversation lasted for about two hours before everyone left. I am sorry that they did not learn much other than not to debate me on matters of history or religion, but some people are so closed off to the fact that they could be wrong that it is a wonder that they learned anything at all. September 12 Einstein: Christian or not?Greeting readers! I am not sure how many of you have survived the onslaught of my seven month hiatus but I am sure there are some out there who still frequent these pages of mine for knowledge and truth (It sure seems that way with all the “hate” mail, though I did get an interesting message that I am not sure where to place). This day I would like to talk about Albert Einstein. Many Christians today like to claim him as their own as do many Atheists, but let us examine his own words here. Now we all know that Albert Einstein claimed to believe in Spinoza’s deity (Spinoza argued that deity and Nature were two names for the same reality, namely the single substance that underlies the universe and of which all lesser "entities" are actually modes or modifications, that all things are determined by Nature to exist and cause effects, and that the complex chain of cause and effect are only understood in part) but did he ever believe in the Christian or Jewish deities? Well Albert Einstein, although Jewish, went through a brief childhood phase of devout Christianity. In an autobiographical sketch written at age 67, he described his short-lived faith, planted in him by daily indoctrination at a Catholic school to which his parents had sent him: "Thus I came -- despite the fact that I was the son of entirely irreligious (Jewish) parents -- to a deep religiosity, which, however, found an abrupt ending at the age of 12. Through the reading of popular scientific books, I soon reached the conviction that much in the stories of the Bible could not be true.” He continues to destroy the hopes of Christians everywhere by saying: “The consequence was a positively fanatic freethinking, coupled with the impression that youth is intentionally being deceived by the state through lies. It was a crushing impression.” It seems he saw through many of the venomous parroting that the clergy did back in that day (many still do this today, unfortunately). "Suspicion against every kind of authority grew out of this experience, a skeptical attitude toward the convictions which were alive in any specific social environment -- an attitude which has never left me, even though later on, because of a better insight into the causal connections, it lost some of its original poignancy.” One of the greatest thinkers of our time was not only put off after discovering what religion truly was but it left a rip in his being. A rip that many of our young today feel when they discover that the “truths” they are brought up to believe are nothing more than brightly painted myths. "It is quite clear to me that the religious paradise of youth, which was thus lost, was a first attempt to free myself from the chains of the 'merely personal,' from an existence which is dominated by wishes, hopes and primitive feelings. Out yonder there was this huge world, which exists independently of us human beings and which stands before us like a great, eternal riddle, at least partially accessible to our inspection and thinking. The contemplation of this world beckoned like liberation....The road to this paradise was not as comfortable and alluring as the road to the religious paradise, but it has proved itself as trustworthy, and I have never regretted having chosen it." Commenting on Einstein's reminiscence, physicist Heinz Pagels wrote: "What this passage reveals is a conversion from personal religion to the 'cosmic religion' of science, an experience which changed him for the rest of his life. Einstein saw that the universe is governed by laws that can be known by us but that are independent of our thoughts and feelings. The existence of this cosmic code -- the laws of material reality as confirmed by experience -- is the bedrock faith that moves the natural scientist. The scientist sees in that code the eternal structure of reality, not as imposed by man or tradition but as written into the very substance of the universe. This recognition of the nature of the universe can come as a profound and moving experience to the young mind." I agree with Pagels (though I would not call science a “religion”). This also shows the dangers that are presented with the currently religious youth of today. What will happen once they discover that what they have been taught as “truth” is truly nothing more than brightly colored paper flapping in the wind, as a mere (and hopefully brief) distraction to finding real answers to the questions that plague those of us brave enough to think on them? Will they lash out at the “religious right” for filling their heads with “sugar plum fairies” for so many years of their life? Will they lash out at their parents for indoctrinating them or not talking to them seriously about these radical beliefs? Or will they simply give up trusting completely, going through life bitter and angry? I would hope that the youth turn to those who have either experienced these feelings of betrayal or (as in my case) freedom of their masks, for guidance. Remember to never be afraid to ask questions. If one cannot answer your questions find someone who can. If you cannot find someone then seek the answers else where, but never stop questioning. Never stop searching. For those who could not arrive to the conclusion themselves, no Einstein was not a Christian. He might have been a convert at a young age, but who is to know how serious it truely was? Einstein was also not an Atheist. He beleived in Spinoza's deity, which is not a deity in and of itself but more of like a force.
February 19 Noah and other MythsThere are many absurdities in the story of Noah's ark and once we've proven that this, and other Christian mythologies, we will know that Jesus is imaginary, prayer is imaginary, Genesis and Revelation are imaginary, and, thus, their god is imaginary. But there is one absurdity in the story of Noah's Ark that deserves special recognition, because it proves that thier god, in addition to being imaginary, is insane. That special absurdity is this: The Christian god senselessly murdered millions of humans and billions of animals in the flood. How do we know it was senseless? Because in Christian mythology, "god" is supposed to be "all-knowing." If thie god were to exist, this god would know what was coming when he created Adam and Eve. Therefore, god knew he would be murdering millions of people. Why didn't god simply speed up Jesus' arrival to avoid the atrocity that is the flood? Or why didn't god program Adam and Eve when he created them to completely circumvent the need for such a horrendous atrocity? The idea that Christians would accept a mass-murdering lunatic as their object of worship shows just how deep religious delusion runs. By murdering nearly every human on the planet, this imaginary god is far more heinous than Hitler. No "loving" and "perfect" being can also be a mass-murderer bent of global genocide. Yet Christians willfully worship him. There is no better indicator that religion is delusion and that God is imaginary. Noah's flood is not the only place where their god displays these ridiculous tendencies to mindlessly slaughter. Here are several other examples. In the book of Exodus chapter 12 verse 28, thier god writes about one of his early massacres: So the people of Israel did just as the LORD had commanded through Moses and Aaron. And at midnight the LORD killed all the firstborn sons in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn son of the captive in the dungeon. Even the firstborn of their livestock were killed. Pharaoh and his officials and all the people of Egypt woke up during the night, and loud wailing was heard throughout the land of Egypt. There was not a single house where someone had not died. Here the death of the children is accomplished by the hand of the Christian god. In Isaiah chapter 13, god paints this word picture: Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children. What a lovely image. In Jeremiah chapter 49, verse 20, god paints a similar picture: Therefore hear the plan which the LORD has made against Edom and the purposes which he has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. At the sound of their fall the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. In Hosea chapter 13, god paints a similar picture: Samaria shall bear her guilt, because she has rebelled against her God; they shall fall by the sword, their little ones shall be dashed in pieces, and their pregnant women ripped open. In Numbers chapter 31, god paints a similar picture: Moses said to them, "Have you let all the women live? Behold, these caused the people of Israel, by the counsel of Balaam, to act treacherously against the LORD in the matter of Pe'or, and so the plague came among the congregation of the LORD. Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. Here Moses, acting as an agent of god, specifies that thousands of male babies and children be killed, as well as thousands of women. The Bible states in verse 35 that the captured women numbered "thirty-two thousand persons in all, women who had not known man by lying with him." This was not a small attack. Tens of thousands men, women and children were massacred. In Deuteronomy Chapter 3 we find this: Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei. The LORD said to me, "Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon." So the LORD our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down, leaving no survivors. At that time we took all his cities. There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og's kingdom in Bashan. All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. We completely destroyed them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying every city—men, women and children. But all the livestock and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves. They massacred all the men, women and children in 60 cities at their god's request. Even in the "New Testament" we find the same sort of thing. In the book of Matthew, chapter 2, mixed into the Christmas story, the Bible describes an amazing massacre of thousands of babies: And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. Think about the thousands of families who were affected by this massacre. The Bible describes their suffering: they wept and could not be comforted. Of course they could not be comforted. If you are a parent, you know exactly how distraught you would feel if an agent of the government came to your door one morning and slaughtered your children. Why would an all-loving god do this? The truth is thier god is imaginary, all of these stories are myths, and the people who believe and revel in these myths are... what? "Insane" is one word that comes to mind. Why would any normal, intelligent, ethical human being "worship" such a heinous, demented and despicable "god" as this? Insanity in the form of deep, deep delusion is the only possible explanation. It is impossible for a "perfect" and "loving" being to also be heinous, demented and despicable. This impossibility tells us that the Christian god is imaginary as well as immoral.
February 18 Easter, another butchered holiday. As I have said numerous times, I have found that the Christians have stolen almost all of their holidays. The ones they couldn't steal, they contaminated with lies to turn people away from those “evil pagan ways”. This stealing of holidays by Christians is seen in a number of pagan or “heathen” festivals. In line with the mother goddess and heavenly virgin theology, the Festival of Diana was ousted by the Festival of the Assumption of the Virgin in August. Like changes were the pagan Parilia in April which was replaced by the feast of St. George. The midsummer water festival in June was replaced by the festival of St. John the Baptist. Each of these replacements has similar themes to the pagan holiday they replace. The Feast of All Souls in November is the ancient heathen Feast of the Dead. The Nativity of Christ replaced that of the Sun, and the Festival of Easter is simply the feast of the Phrygian god Attis at the vernal equinox or the celebration of the Fertility Goddess Ostara. February 14 Kansas Repeals Anti-Evolution Guidelines!!Kansas Repeals Anti-Evolution Guidelines
TOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 13) - The Kansas state Board of Education on Tuesday repealed science guidelines questioning evolution that had made the state an object of ridicule.
The new guidelines reflect mainstream scientific views of evolution and represent a political defeat for advocates of "intelligent design," who had helped write the standards that are being jettisoned. The intelligent design concept holds that life is so complex that it must have been created by a higher authority. The state has had five sets of standards in eight years, with anti- and pro-evolution versions, each doomed by the seesawing fortunes of socially conservative Republicans and a coalition of Democrats and moderate Republicans. The board on Tuesday removed language suggesting that key evolutionary concepts - such as a common origin for all life on Earth and change in species creating new ones - were controversial and being challenged by new research. Also approved was a new definition of science, specifically limiting it to the search for natural explanations of what is observed in the universe. "Those standards represent mainstream scientific consensus about both what science is and what evolution is," said Jack Krebs, a math and technology teacher who helped write the new guidelines. He is also president of Kansas Citizens for Science. The state uses its standards to develop tests that measure how well students are learning science. Although decisions about what is taught in classrooms remain with 296 local school boards, both sides in the evolution dispute say the standards will influence teachers as they try to ensure that their students test well. John Calvert, a retired attorney who helped found the Intelligent Design Network, said under the new standards, "students will be fed an answer which may be right or wrong" about questions like the origin of life. "Who does that model put first?" he said. "The student, or those supplying the preordained 'natural explanation'?" There have been debates or legal battles in several other states over evolution and the intelligent design argument, but none has inspired comedians' jokes or parodies like Kansas' ongoing battle has. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It is about time Kansas dropped it's stupidity and took science back from the religious loonies. The U.S's education system is enough of a joke already, so we really don't need to be handing the keys to our children's brains to the religious fools, who will do nothing but poison our kids' minds with their foolish "invisible man in the sky" myths.
Congratulations Kansas, you have left the Dark Ages and joined us here in the 21st century. February 10 Jesus debunkedChristians have always argued for Jesus' virgin birth, but also argue he was descended from David. This overlooks the fact that if virgin born, Jesus' 'father' Joseph, albeit descended from David, would have had no connection with his conception, and his only human connection would have been through/by/with Mary; however she was of the Aaronic line (i.e. she was related to Elizabeth who was of Aaronic descent - Luke l:6, l:36). As Aaron was of the tribe of Levi, but David was of Judah, then Jesus, if virgin born, could therefore not be of Davidic descent and could not therefore be the messiah which demanded Davidic descent. Furthermore, this would contradict all the New Testament statements that Jesus was a descendent of David - Matthew 1:1, 12:23, 15:22, Mark l0:47, Romans l:3, Revelation 5:5. It has been argued that Jesus could still be of the line of David and was born a virgin for Joseph was Jesus’ adoptive father. But Jesus didn't take on 'David's line' through Joseph being his 'adoptive father' as Rom l: 3 makes quite clear: "descended from David according to the flesh". So here is the problem; Jesus was either of David's line - but that means he wasn't virgin born (i.e. Joseph having to have been responsible for his conception), or he was virgin born, but that precludes him being of the Davidic line (because only Mary was involved in his humanity and she was not of the Davidic line) - so he couldn't have been the Messiah/Christ as the New Testament teaches. There is a lie here somewhere for you can’t have it both ways. The virgin-birth story is only found in two of the twenty-seven New Testament writings, and in Luke, the style of writing indicates the part that relates the story, was written after the following 22 chapters by a different author, and added on to the beginning of Luke afterwards. Furthermore the Catholic Jerusalem Bible admits that Matthew most likely had its virgin birth story added to it also. In fact Luke conflicts sharply with Matthew, e.g. Luke has the birth in the time of the governor Quirinius (Luke 2:2, 3-7), whilst Matthew has it in the time of Herod, but the rule of these two never coincided or overlapped. The Christian "explanation" for this involving the Ramsay inscription regarding Quirinius as dummvir, is futile. Both Luke and Matthew have other major differences, e.g. Matthew says the family fled from Judea immediately to Egypt after the birth (2:4-l4) to avoid Herod and stayed there until he was dead and even on returning, they avoided Judea in the south. However according to Luke, after the birth, the family calmly went to Jerusalem in Judea and then up to Galilee (2:21-22, 39). It is worthwhile noting that the only census known about (Luke has the journey to Bethlehem because of this) as one in 6 CE. Long after Herod died, and indeed long after Christians claim Jesus lived. The only reason that Matthew's author seems to have the virgin-birth story is because he misunderstood an O.T statement (Isaiah 7:l4) that he read as messianic (which it isn't) and referring to a virgin birth (which it doesn't). With regard to Isa 7:l4, it is simply the story of Isaiah saying to king Ahaz of Judah that by the time that a young girl had conceived and her baby was born, the present threat from Syria would be over - 7:l4-17. There is NOTHING messianic about it at all. As, in this, the child was to be called Emmanuel which means 'God with us', but the name 'Jesus' (actually, this is Greek for the Hebrew Jehoshua) means 'Yahweh is salvation', Jesus was therefore not called by the name Emmanuel and did not fulfill this 'prophesy'; however Matthew's author misunderstood this. As Isaiah 8:3-4 says how Isaiah went immediately and impregnated his wife, and the prophesy is again made saying that before the child could even talk, Syria would by smashed by Assyria, it appears the Isaiah 7:l4 prophesy relates to Isaiah's own wife/child and does not have any messianic connotations. In reality there is nothing miraculous in Isaiah's saying; he is only saying a woman (or in the Greek - a virgin) would conceive. It doesn't take too much to realize what has to happen for a virgin to conceive a child. He doesn't say that a girl who would give birth to the child would still be a virgin after conception. The author of Matthew was using the Septuagint 'LXX' - the Greek version of the Hebrew Bible compiled in the second century BC for the Greek-speaking Jews of the Diaspora – i.e. living outside Palestine. It is generally accepted that some parts are very good, but in others it is faulty, e.g. Daniel is such a poor translation in the LXX, the Jews wouldn't even use it. The Hebrew word in Isaiah 7:l4 for the woman/'virgin' is "almah" and does NOT mean a virgin, but a young woman; it is in the LXX that it is rendered 'virgin' and there is the additional fact that in the Greek the root doesn't even necessarily mean a girl who has not had sex, but 'denotes fullness or the like - fully developed". The word actually used here has nothing to do with the virgin state. As the Gospel writers used the LXX, they could not have been Palestinian Jews (i.e. the apostles as stated in the Gospels) or they would have obviously used the Hebrew text and not made such errors. Matthew's author couldn't have been the apostle of that name as he wasn't a Palestinian Jew (nor either an eyewitness as he had to use Mark as a source to write his Gospel). He also makes other errors, e.g. in 27: 9-l0 he says he is quoting Jeremiah but in fact he's quoting Zechariah ll: l2-l3. It is very apparent that the Gospel writers were NOT Palestinian Jews, but either Jewish Christians of the Diaspora or Gentile-Christians. In the case of Mark's author there has to be doubt whether he had even set foot in Palestine in view of the historical, chronological, geographical and theological errors he makes about first century Palestine. But this is where it continues to be manifestly absurd. Jesus was supposedly a true Jew - a direct descendent of Abraham through David (Matthew 1), the Jewish Messiah, the Son of David (Matthew 21:9), the 'lion of the tribe of Judah' (Rev 5:5) and yet whenever he quoted the Old Testament, according to the Gospels that is, he quoted the GREEK LXX version! Furthermore, in some cases the Hebrew original of the LXX text he is quoting would not support the argument he is making, i.e. because of the LXX's inaccuracies. In Mark 7: l-23 Jesus does this; although it would seem the LXX would support the point Jesus is making to the Pharisees, the Hebrew original in fact would not. So we are asked to believe that Jesus - a true Hebrew Jew - chose to use the Greek translation of the Old Test. and furthermore, was unaware of the fact that he was using a passage that in reality was faulty and in the original would say something completely different, and be quite inappropriate for his argument, but according to the Gospels, he floored his orthodox Jewish opponents with this - a mistranslation of their own scriptures - and they did not challenge this! The same applies with James (supposedly Jesus' brother and leader of the Jewish-Christian community in Jerusalem) in Acts 15 - he uses the LXX to support his argument, although the Hebrew original says something quite different and would not support his argument, and yet all the Jews in the audience didn't comment on this!!! Obviously as the writers of the Gospels & Acts were not Palestinian Hebrew-speaking Jews, they had to use the LXX but didn't realize the errors they were making. Therefore, the bad news is that firstly the virgin birth is disproved by the Bible itself, and secondly, there is no written eyewitness testimony for Jesus' supposed life. The situation is adequately summed up by Professor Fuller, Professor of New Testament, Union Theological Seminary, and New York. (A Critical Introduction to the New Testament): "Of the 27 books of the New Testament only the authentic Pauline epistles are, strictly speaking, the testimony of an apostolic witness. And even Paul...was not a witness of the historical Jesus. Since the earliest witnesses wrote nothing...there is not a single book in the New Testament which is the direct work of an eyewitness of the historical Jesus..." (Page 197). February 07 More truths about the Christian god and their god-man Jesus. The Bible presents an interesting picture of their god, i.e. a god who never changes (Malachi 3:6) but actually does frequently change his mind and even regrets what he's done or "repents" (Genesis 6:6,7, Exodus 32:l4, l Samuel l5:35, 2 Samuel 24:l6, l Chronicles 21:l5, Jeremiah l8:8,l0, 26:3,l3,l9, 42:l0, Ezekiel 24:l4, Joel 2:l3, Amos 7:3). Although it is to be noted that Numbers 23:l9 and l Samuel 15:2 say that god never repents. It states god is "spirit", i.e. non-physical (John 4:24) and yet he is always called 'him' or 'he' as if he had a male body, and then it states that although spirit, he has feet (Psalm l8:9), arms (Jeremiah 27:5), wings (Psalm 36:7), hands (Job 27:ll), eyes (Deuteronomy 8:3), a mouth (Isaiah l:20), ears (2 Chronicles 6:40), nostrils (Exodus l5:8) and legs (Genesis 3:8). He also uses a razor - Isaiah 7:20. He also occasionally roars (Joel 3:l6) and sometimes he even whistles (Isaiah 5:26). Although he has never been seen (John l:l8), he has actually been seen (Isa 6:l), and he even revealed his rear to Moses (Exodus 33:21-22). The presence of evil Christians argue that it is through Adam's sin that evil exists and furthermore it is because of his transgression that all humans must die; this is clearly taught by Paul in Rom 5:12,17,18 and is the central theology of Christianity; however, this wholly contradicts 2 Kings 14:6, Ezekiel 18:20, Jeremiah 31:30 that state a person will NOT suffer for an ancestor's wrongdoing (yet this contradicts other biblical verses that clearly state one DOES suffer for an ancestors wrongdoing). If the god of the Bible is truly a god, then there is a dilemma; for god to be god, he has to be omnipotent, responsible for the creation of everything; this includes evil; if he did not create evil, then he was not wholly creative, and therefore cannot be god. In fact the Bible does actually say god commits evil, e.g. Exodus 32:l4, 2 Sam 24:l6, 1 Chron 21:l5, Jer l8:8, 26:3,l3,l9, Jonah 3:l0. Furthermore he sends lying spirits (l Kings 22:23, 2 Chronicles l8:22) and deliberately deceives people (2 Thessalonians 2:ll). And not only this, he admits to being responsible for the creation of evil and misery - Isaiah 45:7, and that he has deliberately made people so he can destroy them - Proverbs l6:4. He condemns killing (Exodus 20:l3) but orders it (Exodus 32:27); he encourages wisdom (Proverbs 4:7) but condemns it (l Corinthians l:l9); he protects the righteous (Proverbs 12:21) but does not (Hebrews ll:36-37); he cuts off the wicked (Proverbs l0:27) but does not (Job 21:7-9); he commands respect for parents (Exodus 20:l2) but encourages hatred for them (Luke l6:9); he blesses peace (Matthew 5:9) but brings war (Matthew l0:34, Revelation l9:ll). It continues by saying god will keep the earth (Ecclesiastes l:4), but will destroy it (2 Peter 3:l0); is invisible and unseen (John l:l8, l Timothy 6:l5-l6) but has been seen (Amos 9:l, Deuteronomy 5:24); he lives in dazzling light (l Timothy 6:l5-l6), but lives in darkness (l Kings 8:l2). From the statements above it is clear that the writers of the bible had no idea of who their god was and they could not agree as to the attributes that their god should have. All of this points to THERE IS NO GOD! The Christian life One example of Christian teaching not being derived from the Bible is how Christians say a great deal of the Bible gives instructions regarding a happy married/family life. In reality, this is not so at all. As far as "Jesus' teaching about the 'sanctity' of marriage" or even family life, the Gospels say very little on this. Jesus' teaching regarding divorce arises in Matthew l9:3-l2 and Mark l0:2-12; Luke and John omit this passage. In Mark, Jesus speaks to his Jewish audience about a woman divorcing her husband - l0:12 - however no such thing was possible in Palestine ! Here the author of Mark betrays the fact that (i)he was not an eyewitness to the events he writes of (ii)that he was not a first century Palestinian Jew (who obviously would not make such an error) i.e. Christians maintain the author of Mark is the same John Mark mentioned in Acts 12:12. However it is clear just from this that he was a Gentile, writing for a Gentile (Rome ?) audience. He makes numerous errors in his Gospel about Palestinian life, geography, customs and theology( the other Gospel writers freely adapted their material to emphasis the point they were trying to make. i.e. their narratives are not reliable accounts, but rather editorial compositions/redactions with no basis in historical fact). Mark also allows no reason for divorce - l0:l2, but the author of Matt does have Jesus saying one reason was acceptable for divorce (ie. unfaithfulness) - ie. l9:9. Presumably by the time Matthew was written, Christians (particularly Gentiles) were finding Jesus' instruction in Mark impossible to follow, so Matthew's author introduced an escape clause. Matt's author omits the statement about women divorcing their husbands as he clearly realized what an error this was (he actually tidies up other errors in Mark). In 1st century Palestine, adultery was not a crime against the woman, but a crime against her husband. Mark is therefore wrong in l0:ll and Matt (in l9:9) therefore corrects this and omits the 'against her'. The statement that Christian life is the basis of a happy fulfilled family life, is certainly not based on Jesus' supposed teaching. In fact Jesus says very little on this subject. One of the occasions he does refer or rather, allude to family life is when he lists some of the Ten Commandments to the man asking about acquiring eternal life, and repeats the commandment of honoring parents. This appears in Matthew l9:l6-22 where the enquirer is a young man (l9:20) and in Luke l8:l8-23, but here he is a ruler. In Mark (l0:l7-22) he is clearly not 'young' as he recalls his youth in l0:20. This is a typical example of how the Gospels do not agree with each other. In Mark, Jesus lists off some of the Decalogue (l0 Commandments) including 'Honor your parents', but he also lists 'Do not defraud' (l0:l9) as one of the Commandments. However, this is not one of the Ten Commandments. (These are found in Exodus 20:l-l7, Deuteronomy 5:6-21). Note how Matt (l9:l8) and Luke (l8:20), correct this error in Mark (they correct others also elsewhere in Mark). This again is an example of how Mark's author was not a Jew (who would at least know the l0 Commandments). Furthermore, it clearly has Jesus saying things that could not have been said, and how the speech cannot be authentic; furthermore, it shows how Matt and Luke's authors freely changed Mark where they saw a mistake; their compositions cannot be reliable accounts either. There is also the factor that it is somewhat inappropriate for Jesus to preach about the honoring of parents when he also advocates, for example, hating one's family (Luke l4:26), that his purpose was to break up families (Matthew l0:34-36, Luke 12:51-53), not even burying them when they die (Matthew 8:21-22) and deserting one's own family (resulting in a reward) (Luke l8:29-30). Jesus' teachings Although Christians maintain Jesus' teaching was very new and revolutionary (e.g. Matt 19:3ff), this is just not so. Most of it is borrowed from the Old Testament and contemporary faiths. In this case, he is simply repeating the strict divorce ruling of Rabbi Shammai. The famous 'Golden Rule' of Jesus in Matt 7:l2 (Do to others as you would wish them to do to you) is also far from unique; this is found in various teachings predating Christianity and even found in its negative form in the Old Testament Apocrypha - Tobit 4:l5. Much of Matthew's 'Sermon on the Mount' (not found in Mark, nor John and broken into pieces and scattered through his Gospel by Luke's author) contains a good deal borrowed from pre-Christian religion, e.g. Matt 5:9 is found in the pre-Christian Book of the Secrets of Enoch (52:ll) and Matthew 5:34-37 is also found there (49:l). In chap. 42 of this pre-Christian book, there are beatitudes which resemble the Gospel ones both in number and form. In summary, there is nothing unique about Jesus' teachings, the record of his life is historically doubtful through the dishonesty and incompetence of the first Christian evangelists and leaders, and the claims made about Jesus by present-day Christians are false. Today’s Christians just make up even more fanciful stories to keep followers flowing and they abuse their power to manipulate the weak minded and weak willed into following their false religion. February 04 How many did the "all-loving" Christian god kill? How many has god killed? (A Complete list and estimated total) "I kill ... I wound ... I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh." -- Deuteronomy 32:39-42 In this post, I've listed and counted god's killings in the bible. But I only included those that said exactly how many were killed by god or god had them killed. I came up with 32.9 million. How many did god drown in the flood or burn to death in Sodom and Gomorrah? How many first-born Egyptians did he kill? The bible doesn't say, so there's no way to know for sure. But it's possible to provide rough estimates in order to get a grand total, and that's what I'm attempting here. January 30 Ten reasons why chrisianity is wrong (starting with # 10)This argument against christianity assumes that the god-myth Jesus was a real man (not a holy/godly figure in any sense). I do not believe such a person ever existed but for this argument let us assume that he did. 10. It is Absurd: This may seem like a re-statement of what this list sets out to show. However, this is misleading. When ever someone comes to you with an extravagant claim the most common reason you may discount the claim is because, to put it curtly, you find it absurd. The reason why the majority of people don't believe in Scientology, reincarnation, Mormonism, Greek gods, etc. is not because they have extensively researched the historicity and veracity of the claims, it is because they don't believe such things happened or could happen in the world. In other words, common sense tells us that when someone claims the absurd almost anything is more likely to be the case ( i.e. they are lying, they are delusional, they are relying on misinformation) then for the absurdity to be real. Men do not miraculously heal the sick, raise the dead, cure the blind, and rise from the grave. The claims of Christianity are prima facie absurd. The burden of proof is on them to prove otherwise. 9. Jesus Has Not Returned: This, also, may seem a soft point. However, for 2000 years—80 generations—a substantial number of every single generation of Christians has whole-heartedly believed that Jesus' return was imminent, meaning that he would return during or shortly there-after their lifetimes. This often included exact dates that, when they came to pass, did not cause the believers to toss their erroneous ideologies aside. This perennial incorrectness goes back to the beginning. One can only understand the earliest Christians—the generation immediately following Jesus' death—as a group who were expecting Jesus to return at any moment ( I Thess 4:15-17). Why did they believe this? They believe simply because, on more than one occasion, Jesus unequivocally said so (Mark 9:1, Matthew 26:64, Mark 13:30). Christians have proven to be resolutely imperturbable and incorrigible to their "saviors" continued failures. 8. God Doesn't Care: Most people believe in some form of god. When asked why they believe in god, the most common answer is taken from the argument from design: the universe is too ordered and beautiful to have arisen without intelligence behind it. Whether or not this is true, this claim has little to do with Christianity. Christianity claims that their god not only created the world but also takes an active part in its management, in our moral choices, and in our fates. In other words; He cares. It is this conception of god that bends credulity to the breaking point. God as essence—that is a "first cause" god or a "higher power" god—is a far less difficult concept than god as being. First of all, according to centuries old Christian dogma, god is immutable. In other words He is a static, non-changing "being" that cannot create new beliefs, make inferences, or adjust desires. Secondly the idea of an omniscient, omnipotent "being" having desires borders on the nonsensical. If all things are known—all that ever was, is, or will be—what would be the point of desiring anything? This is not just a simple word game. Christians consistently claim that god "wants" us to believe in him and follow his commandments. However, they also claim that he knows whether we will do so or not. So, what is the point of Him wanting anything? A god as essence is palatable. A god as being is not only ridiculous but impossible. 7. Other Religions: For most of Christian history the problems caused by other religions were not pressing, if they were considered at all. In the enclosed world of medieval times—when most people would never travel more than 10 miles from their place of birth—people of non-Christian faiths seemed almost phantasms. However, in the modern world the pots have been poured together and the faiths now intermingle on a daily basis. This, of course, brings religious problems to the forefront. But it also should force Christians (and other faiths) to make a few realizations: first, that faiths are conveyed primarily genealogically—from parents to children—as opposed to through dialectical, later-life conversion. We can never reasonably expect everyone to become Christian. This is not because Christianity is right or wrong, but because faiths carry their own momentum that is not derived from the truth or falsity of the beliefs. Secondly, that people of other faiths can live saintly lives of intense moral rectitude that rivals any Christian saint. And third, that people are exceptionally good at perpetuating, believing in, and dying for faiths that are manifestly false (as Christians believe). In other words, as Christians must unhesitatingly accept, people are very good at making up fantastic stories about events and figures in the past and then believing in them with fervor. If Christianity was the only belief system in the world that made extravagant claims, and if its claims resembled none others in the world, then we would have more reason to believe it to be true. However, this is obviously not so. In fact, often the claims of Christianity are hopelessly derivative. Healing and resurrecting god-men have been the objects of stories for millennia (these god-men were particularly common in the Hellenized world of post-Maccabean Palestine. i.e. Apollonius of Tyana). Also, in addition to sharing many strong features with Mithraism and Zoroastrianism, many early Christians found much distaste with the idea of the virgin birth, finding it too pagan. Plutarch writes in Convivial Disputations," The fact of the intercourse of a male god with a mortal woman is conceded by all." 6. There is No Soul: The inexcusable flippancy of the term "soul" abounds. And, although most people believe in it and freely use the term, they have no idea what it means. The evidence for physicalism—that the mind is the brain—has become nothing less than overwhelming. This evidence exists not only in the highest levels of research—where scientists can now point to, and manipulate, the exact location in our grey matter where essential characteristics lie—but it exists in the everyday lives of millions of people who take psychotropic drugs on a daily basis. These users will tell you drugs such as Prozac, lithium, Paxil and Ritalin don't just give them a slight pick-me-up; they make them an entirely different person. Some of them must wonder if their "soul" is depressed or happy, anxiety filled or laid-back. Only by ignoring 200 years of medical progress can we believe that we simply inhabit our bodies—dropping by on the way to something better. It isn't "I have a brain," it's "I am a brain." 5. Evil: The tried and true returns. If you are a Christian you are probably rolling your eyes because you've heard it time and again. Why don't we atheists understand that: [A] God works in mysterious ways, [B] God gave us free will which allows us to commit evil and good, [C] the world is in a fallen state, and [D] Satan represents a real presence in the world? No, we don't understand because: [A] clearly God doesn't work in ways that are too mysterious for you to be unhesitant in calling something "He" did "good" and asking him to do "good" things in the world on your behalf. You can either use moral qualifiers to describe God's actions or you cannot; you can't have it both ways. [B] Not only does this point not jibe with argument "A" (if God works in mysterious ways we couldn't claim that free will is a "good") it is difficult to see how, if free will is good, the using of free will to take away another's free will ( i.e. murder) is not intensely problematic in God's eyes. Hitler used his free will to take away the free will of 10 million others. Thus, if, in 1919, God flipped the "painter" switch in Hitler's mind, the result would have greatly added to the net amount of freedom in the world. [C] This is a non-starter if the Old Testament is not accurate but, even if it is, a God who holds great-great-great… grandchildren responsible for their ancestor's actions does not pass even the bare minimum test of human morality. Without a defined concept of desert, morality is a completely empty concept. It seems God is playing fast and loose on this count. [D] If this objection is forwarded seriously, then it is little more than ditheism (dual theism). Otherwise, in the Christian universe the only power Satan has is that which God lets him have. If you believe in the traditional Christian conception of God you must believe that, ultimately, everything is His fault. Everything! This is a world where rocks fall out of the sky onto innocent people and babies can be eaten by dingoes. 4. The Bible is Not Consistent: Many, if not most, Christians would say that the Bible is inerrant. Well, they are wrong. Saying so doesn't require an appeal to history, science, and/or archaeology; it only requires a demonstration that the Bible is incoherent—that is, it contains claims that cannot be true simultaneously. In such instances either one claim is false or they are both false—there is no other possibility. If you wish to throw rationality out the window and claim that a contradiction is possible, then you can just take your ball and go home; you are now playing a game that you can ask no one else to play with you. One example of many: Matthew (1:1-16) claims that there are 27 generations between David and Jesus, Luke (3:23-38) claims 41 generations. These cannot be reconciled. The Bible is not inerrant. 3. Christianity is not the Religion that Jesus Preached: The story of Christianity is the story of the beliefs that Jesus professed developing into the religion that professes Jesus. To put it another way: dogma. It is pure folly to believe that Simon Peter, Thomas, Mary Magdalene etc. All followed Jesus because, when he died, they would be able to absolve their sins by believing in him. This later theological construction was created by believers who were searching for a meaning to the seemingly pointless execution of their leader and teacher. Those who originally followed Jesus did so because of his life—because he was an exemplary teacher who radically reinterpreted the Law in favor of inclusion rather than exclusion. Those who now follow Jesus do so because of his death. They turn a man's poignant teachings—his life's work—into a secondary and near meaningless preface to the panacea of his death. We primarily have Paul and John the evangelist (two people who did not know Jesus in his life) to thank for this inexcusable dumbing-down of Jesus' life. With Paul and John's help, what Christianity would become is embodied in the Nicene Creed. Take a look at it. Dogmatic fiat has expurgated everything the man stood for. 2. The Gospels are not Historically Reliable: We need not demonstrate Biblical errors solely through appeals to internal consistency. Doing so only tells us that something in the "word of God" is awry—but not necessarily which word is wrong. In order to perform Biblical analysis that actually broadens our view of what is true and false in the "good" book we need to bring in external sources. From these external sources we learn that the Bible makes claims that cannot stand up to even the most cursory historical examination. In the Gospel of Luke the story is told of a census enacted by the governor Quirinius (Luke 2:1-7). The census, according to Luke, required everyone to return to their ancestral homes to be counted. Thus Joseph, being in the line of David, travels from Nazareth to Bethlehem where—after unadvisedly traveling ninety miles with a woman in the final days of pregnancy—Mary gives birth. The Romans, being meticulous record keepers, did take censuses. However, because of this meticulous record keeping, we know that the only census conducted during Quirinius' governorship took place in C.E. 6-7—a time over ten years after Herod was king of Judea (Luke claims they are contemporaries). However, aside from this fact we can use common sense to realize that the story is totally unbelievable. Luke invents an empire-wide migration for a simple tax registration: millions of people traveling hundreds or thousands of miles to go to their ancestral home of a millennium past (David predates Joseph by approx. 1000 years) in order to sign a simple form. Imagine this happening today. Imagine the cataclysmic disruption of societies resulting from the masses of people crossing boarders and oceans in order to sign a form. This, of course, supposes you could even find your ancestral home of a millennium past. No, something is wrong here and it isn't that the Romans liked to periodically enact sadistically cumbersome legislation. No, I think our evangelist needs to go back to history class. But wait… 1. The Gospels are not History: This may seem like a paltry excuse for the number one spot on a list that makes such a grandiose claim. This reason, however, is the lynch pin. The historicity of the Gospels represents the most crucial element of Christianity—for either its truth or falsity. Christianity claims a specific historical relationship between God and man. If that relationship is historically inaccurate then Christianity is wrong. Or, as Paul memorably put it, "if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith." (1 Cor. 15:14). Debate (or lack there of)Recently I was sent a link to a Hebraic Christian web-site that had a “challenge” for all those who were Atheists (questions are in blue my answers are in black):
The questions that The Refiner's Fire, would like to pose are as follows:
My answer: The
answer to this is quiet simple, it no longer means what the Christians
who stole the holiday from the older holidays (Saturnalia, Natalis Solis
Invicti, and Yule) wanted it to mean. All this holiday means to most of the
people is a time for family to get together, gifts to be exchanged, and time to
be shared by those you care about. · Why is it that atheists participate in Halloween, a pagan "holiday" that glorifies ghosts, witches, goblins, and grotesque creatures - and whose origins are steeped in the blood of human sacrifices? My answer: I
would like to know where human sacrifice occurs in the ancient holidays of
Samhain, the Norse Elven Blót, or All Saints Day (in which our modern version
of Halloween derives)? The Catholic Church put in place the celebration of All
Saints Day in an attempt to stamp out the Pagan holidays that took place on
that same day but there are no solid accounts of human ritual sacrifices or
even animal sacrifices taking place during Samhain or Elven Blót for these two
rituals were held in the utmost secrecy, so how would you know?
My answer: For
this one I would like to answer in the following way: The early
industrial period in Europe saw a six-day work
week with only Sunday off, but some workers had no days off at all. Only the labor
and workers rights movements and campaigns by trade unionists in
the nineteenth century saw a five day work week introduced as Saturday
became a day of rest and relaxation. This movement began in England. I then asked my own questions: 1. Explain how your god can be both just and merciful, when these terms apparently contradict each other. 2. Explain why original sin exists. Why should I be eternally tortured for something that a pair of naked fruit-munching simpletons did in a garden over six thousand years ago? If you believe that children are born stained because they were conceived sexually, explain why I would be punished for something my parents did by your merciful and just god. If this does not apply to your sect, explain why. 3. If your god did not want Adam and Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, why did he put the tree in the garden of Eden (and at the center, no less)? Was it for shade? If so, why use something so dangerous as a shade tree? If the purpose of the tree was to tempt Adam and Eve, explain why it's OK for your god to engage in a practice that our modern-day courts of law refer to as "entrapment." 4. If you are a Protestant or a member of an Eastern Orthodox church, explain why you are still using the Catholic Bible, which was formalized by a vote among (supposedly divinely inspired) cardinals and bishops in the fourth century CE, when you disagree with the idea that the Pope, who is higher in the Catholic hierarchy, is divinely inspired; if a Catholic, explain why your church accepts the canonical Bible while rejecting the Apocrypha (do not use the "divinely inspired" argument: Because I am not religious, I will not be able to accept it). 5. If your god wants us to worship him through our own free will, why does he threaten us with Hell? If you have someone threatening you with a punishment, it isn't free will. 6. If Jesus did have to die, why did someone (specifically, Judas) have to be damned in order accomplish the death and resurrection of Jesus? Jesus was at least a volunteer for the cross; I doubt that your god asked Judas if he was willing to go to Hell so that the resurrection could be accomplished. 7. If Judas was willing to go to Hell for humanity (see #6), didn't he make more of a sacrifice than Jesus, who spent only three hours in pain? Shouldn't we then be worshiping Judas? 8. According to the Gospels, from the Christian standpoint, Jesus was the most important person to ever live. From the Roman standpoint, Jesus was a huge pain in the ass because of his political activities. Explain why nothing was written about his life for over thirty years after his death, and nothing except the Gospels was written until the third century CE. 9. Why is it that the life of Jesus was so similar to the lives of pagan Christ’s, particularly Herakles, Dionysius, and Asklepios, whose stories are much older than that of your saviors? 10. Explain why your "just and merciful" god sent bears to kill forty-two children who called his prophet Elisha "bald head." (See 2 Kings 2:23-24). Apparently (by “miracle” or sheer convenience) These exact questions have been asked “numerous” times by Atheists and the answer were on the web-site. Below is the question (blue print), their “answer” (maroon print), then my rebuttal (black print): "1. Do you people even know
what an atheist is? An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in God, simple as
that! These questions were never answered, I was told that all I did was reword the original questions (even though all but one went unanswered) to try to “trick” them. Trick them into what exactly, I have no clue. If you ever confront a Christian like this do not expect to receive an answer out of them. They will dance around the question with bible versus and condemn you to their Hell but they will not answer the questions directed at them. Why, you might ask? Because they can’t. November 15 Jesus liedDID JESUS LIE? Jesus promised his followers in no uncertain terms that he would soon return in glory and vindication. He vowed to redeem their suffering and to establish the Kingdom of God* on earth.. To heighten their expectations he assured his followers that most of them would live to see all of this come to pass. His failure to do so places Christians on the horns of a serious dilemma by exposing him as a false prophet. Jesus’ hollow promises work to seriously undermine his credibility. If the credibility of Jesus is undermined, so is that of the church. If, on the other hand, it is argued that the gospels and Paul reported incorrectly, does that not seriously undermine the credibility of the New Testament? Even if one were to argue that God knowingly inspired the contradictions, errors and broken promises in the New Testament, as have some, why should anyone believe any of its teachings if so much of it could be false? In Matthew 7:15, the famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warns his listeners to, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” A "false prophet" is defined in Deuteronomy 18:21-22 where it reads: "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously. Thou shalt not be afraid of him". Did Jesus ever predict something which didn't happen? The answer is a resounding yes. He in fact told several bald-faced lies. In Matthew 7:19 we read, “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire". Here Jesus condemns false prophets to hell. Since he himself qualifies as a false prophet isn't he saying that he should go to hell? The following quotes confirm that Jesus deliberately lied to his followers thereby leading them into false expectations. Matthew 10:23 - When giving instructions to his apostles
as to just how they are to go about spreading his message Jesus
says,." . . . for truly I say unto you, you shall not finish
going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes." Matthew 24:33-34 - After prophesying a wide assortment of events including the second coming, Jesus said to his disciples, " . . . when you shall see all these things, know that it (the 2nd coming) is near, even at the door. This generation shall not pass till these things be fulfilled." He was obviously referring to the contemporary generation. Matthew 26:64 - When brought before Caiaphas, the Chief Priest, Jesus said to him, "I tell you, hereafter you shall see the Son of Man . . . coming on the clouds of heaven." According to this the second coming was to happen during Caiaphas' lifetime. Mark 9:1 - Jesus said to the people and to his disciples, ”Verily I say unto you, that there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. Luke 21:27-28 -Jesus said to the congregation, “And then shall they see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” Luke 21:32 - Jesus said, again to the congregation, “This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.” John 5:47 - Jesus says, "If you do not believe his [Moses'] writings, how will you believe my words?" To Christians Moses' writings are the five books of the Pentateuch, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. In them is given the law of Moses which includes, among other things, the hallowed Ten Commandments. Jesus either ignored or actually broke many of them as we have seen. John 18:20 - When being questioned by the high priest, Jesus answered, "I spake openly to the world; I have ever** taught in the synagogues and in the temple, and in secret have I said nothing." Here he told two lies. For example, the Sermon on the Mount, perhaps his most famous sermon was delivered neither in a synagogue nor in the temple but on a mountain top (Matthew 5:1.) In Matthew 16:20 he warns his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. In other words, Keep it a secret. Revelation 22:7, 12, 20 - Jesus says, "Behold, I come quickly." Almost two thousand years have passed, all those who knew him are long dead, yet Jesus’ promise of a quick return remains unfulfilled. I think it’s time to acknowledge that either the New Testament Gospels are fiction or that Jesus flat-out lied***. October 28 Hell/Judgment HousesThese are rediculous. These christians actually reinacts parts of the 9/11 attacks, abortions, suicides, and people burning in their imaginary Hell for trivial things. These people actually reduce 9/11 to not listening to their god! These Hell Houses only help our position on their religion and show that christians will go to any length to scare people into believing. I think a better idea for a "Hell House" would be what the U.S. would look like if these nut-cases actually had control over the country. Imagine, Gay's and Les' being put to death because of what they are and the choices they make. Women are forced to carry unwanted babies (probably breaking a family apart or inviting abuse). Anyone who disagrees with the christians are either put to death or expelled from the country. Not my idea of a way to run a scociety. Sounds too much like Nazi Germany and the old England in which we won our independance. October 26 The Jesus "prophecies"I recently received an email pertaining to the different prophecies pertaining to the god-man Jesus in the Christian bible. “Look at all the prophecies Jesus fulfilled”, they say(basically). “He must be the savior!" Well, Let's look at some common prophecies and a very brief overview of what is wrong with them: Virgin birth No, there is no virgin birth prophecy. Is 7:14 reads with "ha-almah", which means "young woman". "Bet'ulah" is the Hebrew term for virgin, and it is used later in Isaiah, so the author of Isaiah certainly knew the difference. Then there's Is 8:3, which has that child mentioned in Is 7:14 being born. Is 9:6 refers to that same child of Is 8:3. Jesus Is 53 deals with Israel, not some savior. The “pierced” man Ps 22 does not read "pierced". "Ka-'ari" means "like a lion" There is no prophecy of the savior being in the ground 3 days and coming back. Judaism in fact has no dying and rising savior story. Look at Is 9:1-2 and then look at Matt 4:12-16. Notice something amiss? Yeah. The author of Matthew chopped part of Is 9:1 out. Talk about manufacturing a prophecy to fit your needs! Micah 5:2 refers only to that the savior's lineage comes from Bethlehem, not that he would be born there. That is to say, the savior is of the Davidic line, and Jesus wasn't of the Davidic line! Those are just some of the crap "prophecies". You're better off not trying the rest. October 03 A new way to put itThis is a story that was sent to me from a reader. I like the point to it and it sums up my reasons for all this quite nicely. I especially like how they gave me the resources for their work!! Vietnam War Hero. Suppose I told you there was a soldier in the Vietnam War named "Hero Savior" who miraculously calmed storms, healed wounds, conjured food and water out of thin air, and then was blown up by artillery, but appeared again whole and alive three days later, giving instructions to his buddies before flying up into outer space right before their very eyes. Would you believe me? Certainly not. You would ask me to prove it. So I would give you all the evidence I have. But all I have are some vague war letters by a guy who never really met Hero Savior in person, and a handful of stories written over thirty years later by some guys named Bill, Bob, Carl, and Joe. I don't know for sure who these guys are. I don't even know their last names. There are only unconfirmed rumors that they were or knew some of the war buddies of Hero Savior. They might have written earlier than we think, or later, but no one really knows. No one can find any earlier documentation to confirm their stories, either, or their service during the war, or even find these guys to interview them. So we don't know if they really are who others claim, and we're not even sure these are the guys who actually wrote the stories. You see, the undated pamphlets circulating under their names don't say "by Bill" or "by Bob," but "as told by Bill" and "as told by Bob." Besides all that, we also can't find any record of a Hero Savior serving in the war. He might have been a native guide whose name never made it into official records, but still, none of the historians of the war ever mention him, or his amazing deeds, or even the reports of them that surely would have spread far and wide. Besides the dubious evidence of these late, uncorroborated, un-sourced, and suspicious stories, the best thing I can give you is that war correspondence I mentioned, some letters by an army sergeant actually from the war, who claims he was a skeptic who changed his mind. But he never met or saw Hero in life, and never mentions any of the miracles that Bob, Bill, Carl, and Joe talk about. In fact, the only thing this sergeant ever mentions is "seeing" Hero after his death, though not "in flesh and blood," but in a "revelation." That's it. This sergeant also claims the spirit of Hero Savior now enables him and some others to "speak in tongues" and "prophecy" and heal some illnesses, but none of this has been confirmed or observed by anyone else on record, and none of it sounds any different than what thousands of other cults and gurus have claimed. So, too, for some unconfirmed reports that some of these believers, even this army sergeant, endured persecution or even died for believing they "saw Hero in a revelation"--a fact no more incredible than the Buddhists who set themselves on fire to protest the Vietnam War, certain they would be reincarnated, or the hundreds of people who voluntarily killed themselves at Jonestown, certain their leader was sent by God. Okay. I've given you all that evidence. Would you believe me then? I would hope not. No one trusts documents that come decades after the fact by unknown authors, and hardly anyone believes the hundreds of gurus today who claim to see and speak to the spirits of the dead, heal, and predict the future. Every reasonable person expects and requires extensive corroboration by contemporary documents and confirmed eyewitness accounts. Everyone would expect here at least as much evidence as I'd need to prove I owned a nuclear missile, yet the standard required is actually that of proving I own an interstellar spacecraft--for these are clearly very extraordinary claims, and as we saw above, such claims require extraordinary evidence, as much as would be needed, for example, to convince the United Nations that I had an interstellar spacecraft on my lawn. Yet what we have for this Hero Savior doesn't even count as ordinary evidence, much less the extraordinary evidence we really need. To complete the analogy, many other things would rightly bother us. Little is remarkable about the stories told of Hero Savior, for similar stories apparently have been told of numerous Vietnamese sorcerers and heroes throughout history--and no one believes them, so why should we make an exception for Hero? The documents we have from Bob, Bill, Carl, and Joe have also been tampered with--we've found some cases of forgery and editing in each of their stories by parties unknown, and we aren't sure we've caught it all. Apparently, their stories were used by several different cults to support their causes, and these cults all squabble over the exact details of the right cause, and so tell different stories or interpret the stories differently to serve their own particular agenda. And the earliest version, the one told by Bob, which both Bill and Joe clearly copied, added to, and edited (which Carl might have done, too, perhaps by borrowing loosely from Joe), appears to have been almost entirely constructed out of passages from an ancient Vietnamese poem, arranged and altered to tell a story full of symbolic and moral meaning. These and many other problems plague the evidence, leaving it even more suspect than normal. This Hero Savior analogy entirely parallels the situation for Jesus. Every reason we would have not to believe these Hero Savior stories applies to the stories of Jesus with all the same force. So if you agree there would be no good reason to believe these Hero Savior stories, you must also agree there is insufficient reason to believe the Jesus Christ stories. Hence I am not a Christian because the evidence is not good enough. For it is no better than the evidence proposed for Hero Savior, and that falls far short of the burden that would have to be met to confirm the very extraordinary claims surrounding him.

September 25 My thoughts on christianityThe Christian faith is based on the belief that their bible is indeed the word of their god. If their bible cannot be shown to be inspired, then the Christian faith could be said to be false. If the Christian bible cannot be shown to be inspired, then the whole of Christianity can be said to be the same as any other religion that has been devised and practiced by man. September 21 Questions to Christians.Want to Convert Me?Here is another set of questions I think the Christians should answer, if they ever expect me to be a Christian again. The Hierophant's Proselytizer Questionnaire Presented to: Christians By: the Hierophant’s at squirrelsisland.com Under no circumstances will "The LORD works in mysterious ways" or other arguments in that vein be acceptable. If a question does not apply to your particular sect, explain why. Thank you! 0. If necessary, use this space to explain any unique beliefs your sect has about the nature of your god, heaven, hell, the Bible, the Holy Spirit/Ghost, Satan, etc. 1. Explain why your god's only son had to die so we can go to magic happy land when we croak. 2. Did everyone who died before Jesus died go to Hell? Justify your answer. 3. If a Catholic, justify the Inquisition and other persecutions of "heretics" throughout the centuries, concentrating on why the Pelagianists, the Priscillianists, and the Manichaeans were persecuted; if a Protestant, justify the witch trials and the way that Protestants constantly hunted down native Americans until there were so few that the government could simply take their land; if a member of an Eastern Orthodox church, justify the persecutions of the Old Believers after the reforms of the seventeenth century. 4. Explain why your sect (whether Catholic, Protestant, or Eastern Orthodox) pursued, tortured, and killed people who were not Christian. 5. Explain why your sect (whether Catholic, Protestant, or Eastern Orthodox) pursued, tortured, and killed people who were not members of your particular sect. 6. Explain why I should believe that your god is all-good when the only real information we have about him is the Bible, which clearly describes him as both good and evil. (See Isaiah 30:32, Luke 14:26, Numbers 31:17-18, Matthew 10:34, Amos 3:6, Deuteronomy 18:8, Deuteronomy 20:16, Exodus 20:5, Exodus 32:27, Isaiah 45:7, Psalms 52:5, Luke 22:36, and Jeremiah 18:11 for a small sample of Biblical passages which describe Jehovah as having an evil morality at times). 7. Explain why, when racism is clearly wrong, Jesus was clearly a racist (see Mark 7:25-29). NOTE: under no circumstances will I believe the idea that racism is morally acceptable. 8. Explain why, when discrimination against women is clearly wrong, the Bible clearly supports the oppression of women. Answering this question entails refuting 1 Cor 11 and 1 Tim 2:11-15. NOTE: under no circumstances will I believe that discrimination against women solely on the basis of sex is morally acceptable. 9. Explain why, when slavery is clearly wrong, the Bible clearly supports slavery. Answering this question entails refuting 1 Peter 2:18. NOTE: under no circumstances will I believe that slavery is an acceptable way to run a society. 10. Explain why children should submit to their parents' decisions even when those decisions are clearly evil. Answering this question entails refuting Deuteronomy 21:18-21, Proverbs 13:24, and Hebrews 12:7-8. 11. Explain why, if your god loves us all, more than half of us are going to Hell after we die. Specifically, refute or explain the following words of Christ, as presented in the New Testament: "Many are called but few are chosen," and "Straight is the gate, and narrow is the way that leadeth unto salvation, and few there be that find it." If your god loves all of us, couldn't he find a better way? 12. Explain what type of offense could possibly justify eternal, unbearable torture in Hell; if your sect does not believe in Hell, then refute every passage in the Old and New Testaments which describes Hell (such as 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 and Revelation 20:15). Do not exceed 100 words. 13. Explain how your god can be both just and merciful, when these terms apparently contradict each other. 14. Explain why possession by demons and/or other evil spirits was common during the time of Jesus, but hardly mentioned in the Old Testament, and apparently has been explained completely away today by things such as epilepsy and schizophrenia. 15. Explain why, if the personality resides in the soul, things like drugs and brain damage can affect someone's personality. 16. If heaven is a place where everyone is perfectly happy, then explain how I could be happy in heaven if I had loved ones in Hell. 17. What is Heaven like? 18. What is Hell like? 19. 20. Explain why getting dunked in or sprinkled with water will prevent me from being eternally tortured for the actions of the naked fruit-munching simpletons mentioned in #19. 21. If your god did not want Adam and Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, why did he put the tree in the garden of Eden (and at the center, no less)? Was it for shade? If so, why use something so dangerous as a shade tree? If the purpose of the tree was to tempt Adam and Eve, explain why it's OK for your god to engage in a practice that our modern-day courts of law refer to as "entrapment." 22. Explain why sex, potentially one of the most wonderful, beautiful things in human nature, is considered "bad" by your particular sect. If your sect does not consider sex to be "bad," then refute Matthew 19:12, 1 Corinthians 7 (particularly verses 1 and 9), Galatians 5:17, 1 Thessalonians 4:3, James 1:14-15, Matthew 24:38, Luke 17:27, and Revelation 14:4. 23. Explain why, if Jesus was perfect, he thought that the end of the world was coming soon, when it has clearly not come yet. See Matthew 16:27-28. 24. Explain why some people (James, Peter, Paul, Thomas, etc.) should get convincing physical proof of miracles, while the rest of us are supposed to take these happenings on faith. 25. Why are the stories of the resurrection inconsistent? 26. 27. If your god is kind and gentle, why do some animals have to eat meat? 28. If your god is kind and gentle, why did he create parasites? 29. If your god wants us to worship him through our own free will, why does he threaten us with Hell? If you have someone threatening you with a punishment, it isn't free will. 30. Why would your god deliberately cause sinners to sin (cf. Romans 9:15-23 and numerous parts of the book of Exodus where Jehovah says, "I will harden Pharaoh's heart."). Are these sinners still responsible for the sins which your god forces them, against their will, to commit? Justify your answer. 31. 32. If Judas was willing to go to Hell for humanity (see #31), didn't he make more of a sacrifice than Jesus, who spent only three hours in pain? Shouldn't we then be worshipping Judas? 33. Why should we accept the words of the gospel writers as truth when they are known to be liars? (See Romans 3:7). 34. Do you believe that your god is anti-homosexual? If so, explain why he would create homosexuals in the first place. If not, refute or explain away Leviticus 20:13 and Romans 1:26-27. 35. Explain why prayer is OK, but spell casting is not, when both amount to the same thing: requesting that a superior supernatural force to intercede in a way that would be impossible according to the normally accepted laws of physics. 36. 37. Explain why you believe a person whose life is so poorly documented (see #36) was even ever born. 38. Define the word "Christ," including references to the pagan origins and meaning of the word. 39. Explain why Jesus, who was anti-Gentile (see Mark 7:25-29) and anti-sex (see Luke 14:26 and Matthew 19:12), would want to be anointed with oil in a pagan sexual rite after his death (see your definition for #38). 40. In light of Matthew 10:34, explain why Jesus is called the Prince of Peace. 41. The name "Jesus" has been anglicized. What was the original (Hebrew) name of Jesus? Where did you get this information? This is a bonus question. 42. Why is it that the life of Jesus was so similar to the lives of pagan Christ’s, particularly Herakles, Dionysius, and Asklepios? 43. If your god requires that people believe in him and follow his orders through their own free will, why do Christians push their views on public policy? 44. Explain why being a good Christian requires you to push your beliefs on others. If you do not believe that you have to push your views on others (no matter how much this annoys them), explain why you do not believe this despite the fact that the New Testament seems to suggest that you must do this to get to Heaven (for instance, in Matthew 28:19-20). 45. Explain why spreading the "truth of Christ" requires you to spread lies about other religions, such as the idea that so-called "white witches" worship the Christian devil. (Incidentally, they don't, and this rumor has been persistently spread by Christians since the second century CE). 46. At no point in the four Gospels did Jesus claim to be the son of your god. (He said "son of man" quite frequently, and at one point referred to himself as "a son of god," but that was a common Hebrew expression at the time. Someone who was "a son of god" was a Jew. This reflected the Israelites' belief that they were the chosen people of your god. See Job 1:6). Why, then, do you believe that Jesus was divine? If you don't believe that Jesus was divine, then why do you call yourself a Christian? 47. Given the fact that Jesus did not say anything original (the Golden Rule and the "turn the other cheek" idea were stolen from Buddhism; and the Beatitudes were common in the Jewish devotional literature at the time), why do you see Jesus as such a great thinker/philosopher/ethicist? 48. When Jesus said, "Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also," why do you suppose that most Christians fight for their rights? To put it another way, why don't we, as a country of 85% Christians, let the government abuse us? 49. Why are so many Christian holidays on the same day as Pagan holidays? Couldn't the early Church fathers have converted pagans only by appealing to their reason and/or faith if Christianity is the true religion? 50. Explain how your god can be "just and merciful" in light of Exodus 20:5. 51. Do you believe that the Old Testament should be accepted as part of Christian theology? If so, explain how you can worship such a cruel, sadistic asshole (see Numbers 31:17-18, Deuteronomy 20:16, Proverbs 20:30, Amos 3:6, Deuteronomy 13:8, Psalms 3:7, Psalms 52:5, etc.); if not, explain how you can believe that Jesus is the promised savior sent by your god without the messianic prophecies and the ruling rights of the line of David, both of which are in the Old Testament in books such as Isaiah, Zechariah, Daniel, Psalms, etc. (as opposed to, say, believing that Jesus was an irritating nut wandering around saying things that people didn't like much). 52. Explain why your "just and merciful" god sent bears to kill forty-two children who called his prophet Elisha "baldhead." (See 2 Kings 2:23-24). 53. If prostitution is wrong, why are there so many examples of it in Genesis? (For instance, Gen 19:8, where Lot offers his daughters to a mob so that his guests can avoid gang rape). 54. What is the sin that people committed that is so incredibly bad that your god had to become flesh and die to correct? 55. Are all members of other faiths bad? Are they all damned to Hell? Justify your answer with quotes from the Bible. 56. Are all atheists/agnostics/humanists bad? Are they all damned to Hell? Justify your answer with quotes from the Bible. 57. What was your motive in proselytizing to me? 58. Where is Heaven? 59. Where is Hell? 60. Why don't animals go to heaven or hell when they die? What makes us so special? 61. Why does Satan try to get peoples' souls? 62. Once Satan has someone's soul, what does he do with it? 63. Is your god perfect? Justify your answer. 64. Where does our soul stay while we are alive? 65. Explain how you can believe in Satan when your faith is directly descended from the Jewish faith, when the Jews did not even believe in Satan until they absorbed the Egyptian god Set while they were captives in Egypt. 66. Why do evil people often prosper? Justify your answer. 67. Why do good people so often fail to prosper? Justify your answer. 68. When the end of the world comes, will your god raise our actual bodies, or just our souls? Explain. 69. Explain why your god lets airplanes with sinless infants on board crash. 70. What is sin, exactly? 71. If Jesus is perfect, then justify the parable of the fig tree (Matthew 21:17-19, Mark 11:14-20). 72. Explain why Christians have harassed "white witches" for almost two thousand years now, when the central rule of the “white witches” ethical system is "an it harm no one, do what thou wilt." 73. Explain why Christians (yes, that includes all branches of Christianity) have spread the lie that Jews put Jesus to death when, in actuality, it was the Romans who put Jesus to death. (For a good example of New Testament anti-semetism, see 1 Thessalonians 2:15). 74. Explain why your god created humans as imperfect, then set his standards so high that no one could possibly live up to them, then punishes us for not living up to his standards. Doesn't this also constitute "entrapment?" 75. If we are created in your god's image and likeness (Gen 1:27), how can we also be imperfect? 76. Why was it OK for the ancient Israelites to sacrifice animals to their god, while it is wrong for modern religions to sacrifice animals to their gods? Justify your answer. 77. Why would your god confuse people? (See 1 Sam 7:10 and Gen 11:9). Isn't life confusing enough already? 78. Why would your god cause blindness, deafness, and dumbness? (See Ex 4:11) 79. Why would your god want to damn people by making them believe false things? (See 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12). 80. Should the book of Revelation be taken literally? Explain your answer. 81. Would it be good for men to castrate themselves? Justify your answer, taking Matthew 19:12 into account. 82. What exactly is faith? 83. All of the various Christian sects ignore parts of the Bible, usually because those parts of the Bible are inconvenient. Explain which parts of the Bible your sect ignores, and explain why it is OK to ignore those parts of the Bible. 84. Why did your god allow Satan to do evil things to Job (Job 2:7 etc.)? Wouldn't your god better spend his time punishing unbelievers? 85. If Jesus and his father are one (John 10:30), then why does Jesus have to pray (i.e. Matthew 26:39)? 86. Explain your belief in heaven in light of Job 7:9 and Ecclesiastes 9:5. 87. Christ giving himself up on the cross was a great gesture, true, but wouldn't it have been more sensible for him to continue spreading his message until he died a natural death? Answer this question in light of your answer to question #1. 88. What is your interpretation of the temptation of Christ by Satan in the desert (Matthew 4:5-8, Luke 4:5-9)? 89. In view of Matthew 6:5-6, shouldn't prayer in public schools be discouraged? Support your answer with scripture quotes. 90. Do you feel that the last words of Christ were significant? If so, why do the four gospels attribute three different sentences to Christ as his last? (Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34: "My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?"; Luke 23:46: "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit"; John 19:30: "It is finished"). 91. Matthew and Mark say that the last words of Christ were, in Hebrew, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" This has traditionally been translated as, "My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?" However, a more accurate translation would be, "My El, My El, why has thou forsaken me?" El is the name of a specific pagan god. Why would Jesus call out to a pagan god at the moment of his death? 92. A commonly recited litany in many forms of Christianity is "The LORD is my shepherd." (Psalm 23:1). Given the fact that the only reasons that people raise sheep are to rob them of their clothes and to kill them for meat, and the fact that sheep will often follow the shepherd to their destruction, do you think that this is any appropriate image for your god? Justify your answer. 93. Why is the theory of the big bang any more (or less) likely that the idea that your god created the universe? Justify your answer. NOTE: I admit that science has not explained where the original super-condensed particle came from, but no one has ever explained where your god came from, either. 94. If your god is everywhere at the same time, and hell is the absence of (or separation from) your god, how can he be omnipresent? 95. In the Genesis story, your god tells Adam and Eve that the day they eat from the tree of knowledge they will surely die (Gen 2:17). The devil tells them that they will not die, but that their eyes would be opened and they would know the difference between good and evil (Gen 3:5). Wasn't Satan telling the truth here? Is your god a liar? Justify your answer in light of Jeremiah 20:7 and Ezekiel 14:9. 96. If Lucifer is not as powerful as your god, then he cannot possibly be omnipresent. How could he possibly get as many followers as you seem to think he has? 97. The Bible constantly describes your god as male. In view of the fact that your god supposedly created everything, and creation is very much a female function, isn't this at least a little bit absurd? Justify your answer. 98. In light of the Trinity, angels, the Virgin Mary, etc., isn't Christianity polytheistic? If the Trinity is three who are one, why the three names? Justify your answer. 99. Have you read the entire Bible? If not, how can you be devoted enough to try and convert me to a religion that you don't know that much about? Isn't knowing as much as possible about something necessary to understanding it? Isn't understanding something necessary to being completely devoted to it? 100. Why is 2 Kings 19 exactly identical to Isaiah 37? 101. Is Jesus's three days in Hell really an ultimate sacrifice, when more than half of humanity going to spend eternity there (see question #11)? 102. If your sect considers the King James Bible to be the official and/or authoritative translation, justify this in light of the fact that when King James commissioned his translation to be poetic rather than accurate. How can you possibly use an inaccurate translation as your reference for what is/is not the word of your god? If your sect does not use the King James Bible, what translation do they use? Justify the use of that particular translation. 103. Assume that I do not believe that Jesus died for my sins, or that if he did, that necessarily means I will go to your heaven. Name one thing that Jesus ever did for me. 104. Before Mary was knocked up by the Holy Spirit/Ghost, she was never asked for her consent. (She was warned; see Luke 1:31). Mary was also asleep when your god knocked her up; this strongly suggests that he didn't want her to protest. Does this mean that Mary was raped by your god? Do you think rape is wrong? Explain. 105. According to Luke, Mary knew that she was pregnant with the Messiah. Living in the times she lived in, she must have known the scripture; therefore, she must have known that he would have to suffer horribly during his life. Was it moral for Mary to carry her baby to term, or would it have been more humane for her to have an abortion? Explain. 106. If it was foretold that Jesus was to be crucified, and if he knew this, and if he was the son of your god, why did he do everything he could to avoid being crucified? (See, for instance, Matthew 26:39). 107. If the Holy Spirit/Ghost is the father of Jesus (Luke 1:35), then why is the central figure of your trinity called God the Father? 108. Mary and Jehovah were never joined in wedlock. Does it bother you that Jesus is technically a bastard? 109. The original Hebrew word for the Holy Ghost/Spirit includes the idea that the Holy Spirit/Ghost is female in gender. Isn't this rather silly when you consider the fact that the Holy Ghost/Spirit is actually the father of Jesus (Luke 1:35)? 110. Matthew 28:11-15 contains an account of a conspiracy between the Jews and the Roman soldiers to spread the story that the disciples stole the body of Christ. How could Matthew have known about this, since no Jews or Romans would have admitted to it? If it was such a transparent conspiracy that an outsider could have seen it, why didn't the other three gospels mention it? Why didn't the Roman soldiers get into trouble? 111. Jews believe that people are basically good people and can work to overcome their sinful tendencies. Most Christian sects, following the teaching of Psalm 51:5, 1 Kings 8:46, Ezekiel 18:4, Isaiah 59:2, and Psalm 143:2, believe that people are completely debased and hopelessly lost in sin, and that only your god can lift us out of this state if he decides to bestow his gift of grace on us? Isn't this an incredibly negative view of people? Isn't Judaism a more mature faith just for this reason? 112. How do you, as an individual, feel about Psalm 51:5? 113. What does your sect teach about Psalm 51:5 (and 1 Kings 8:46, etc.), predestination, and similar matters? 114. Don't you think that the idea that no matter what we do, we can never be good and righteous without help from your god (Isaiah 64:6) fosters an unnatural and unhealthy dependency on him? 115. Revelation 22:16 says that Jesus is the "offspring of David." Mary was not descended from David, but Joseph was. Doesn't this mean that Jesus wasn't the son of your god at all, but the (mortal and not divine) son of Joseph? 116. What would the correct thing to do be if your god gave you a command that was harmful and/or destructive to you? A common argument, which comes from Paul, states that because clay pots don't complain about what the potter does with them, people shouldn't complain about what their maker (supposedly, your god) does with them, but this completely ignores the vitally important argument that clay pots have no sense of self-awareness and cannot think or feel love, pain, anger, etc. If you want to make this argument, you have to deal with this difference. 117. What (or who) does your sect believe the number 666 represents? Justify your answer. 118. If your god is "just and merciful," why would he take Solomon's kingdom away from Solomon's son while not punishing Solomon, when it was Solomon himself who committed the sin of idolatry? What did Solomon's son do to deserve punishment? (See 1 Kings 11:12). 119. Why is Solomon commonly considered to be the paragon of wisdom by many Christians, when he constantly sinned against your god (1 Kings 11:4-10, etc.)? Personally, if I had a god talking to me, I'd do what he said. 120. Don't you think that an anti-sex position (see question #22) is a rather silly position for your sect to take when the biblical book "Song of Solomon" is a piece of erotic poetry? (For instance, in Song of Solomon 8:2, the bridegroom proposes to "drink of spiced wine of the juice of the pomegranate." The pomegranate was a symbol of the female genitalia, and the "spiced wine" represented menstrual blood). 121. Does it bother you that the cross, supposedly a Christian symbol, was actually stolen from the Egyptians? Why or why not? (The Egyptian cross, the ankh, was a male-female symbol similar in concept to the yin-yang. When the Christians stole the ankh from the Egyptians, they removed the female symbol, or yoni, leaving only the masculine symbol-- a subtle way of reinforcing the idea that women are lesser beings). 122. How do you explain that Christians are twice as likely to have sadomasochistic tendencies as non-christians? 123. What is the incredibly important doctrinal difference that requires the fighting between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland? 124. Even if your god did create the universe, why does he want to be worshipped? Is your god an egomaniac? 125. What are your beliefs concerning Wicca? How much do you know about Wicca? 126. What do you think the word "Satanist" means? 127. How do you explain the fact that the word "blood" occurs over 400 times in the Bible? Isn't this a rather savage way to write a book that is supposed to be at the center of an ethical system? 128. Throughout the Bible, your god commands his followers to wage merciless war on unbelievers (Luke 22:36, Deuteronomy 13:8, Exodus 20:23-25, Deuteronomy 20:16, Matthew 10:34, Numbers 31:17-18, etc). If you are one of his followers, why aren't you out waging merciless war on unbelievers? 129. Numbers 23:21 says that your god "has not seen wickedness in Israel." If this is so, explain why your god burned Israelites for complaining (Num 11:1), sent a plague against them for eating the meat he had given them (Num 11:33), why he burned people for using incense (Num 16:35), why he sent a plague against the Israelites who accused Moses of wrongdoing (Num 16:44-49), and why he sent fiery snakes among the Israelites (Num 21:5). Is your god a liar, or was it just more convenient for him to lie at that particular place and time, or what? 130. What was it that was so bad about eating an apple that death had to result from that act? 131. What was it about humanity's torturing and killing of your god's only son that made your god so happy that he again promised eternal life to everyone who believed in him. 132. How do you explain that Matthew and Luke give different genealogies for Jesus? 133. Matthew says that the prophecy given in Matthew 27:9 was given by Jeremiah. How do you explain that this prophecy was not given by Jeremiah at all, but by Zechariah (in Zech 11:12)? 134. Matthew says (in Matt 2:21) that Jesus dealt in Nazareth so that he could fulfill a prophecy stating that the Messiah would be called a Nazarene. Where is this prophecy in the Old Testament? 135. Matthew says that on the triumphant entry into Jerusalem, Jesus was riding on an ass and a colt (Matt 21:7). How do you explain that the original prophecy (Zech 9:9) stated that Jesus would be riding on only one ass, and the other gospel writers place Jesus only on one ass (Mark 11:7, Luke 19:35, and John 12:15)? 136. In Matthew 1:23, Matthew has the angel say that Jesus would be born of a virgin. However, the prophecy that Matthew is referring to, Isaiah 7:14, uses the Hebrew word almah, which simply means a young woman. It has nothing to do with sexual purity; the Hebrew word for virgin is bethulah. How do you explain this? 137. Isaiah 7:16 seems to say that before Jesus had reached the age of maturity, both of the Jewish countries would be destroyed. Where is the fulfillment of this prophecy in the New Testament? 138. Matthew 1:23 says that Jesus would be called Immanuel, which means "God with us." Why does no one (not even his parents) call him Immanuel at any point in the New Testament? 139. How many inconsistencies in the Bible, other than those mentioned in this paper, do you know of? Cite chapter and verse for as many as you have room for. 140. If even the contemplation of sinning is a sin (i.e. "sinning in your heart"; see, for example, Matthew 5:28) and if Jesus was tempted by Satan in the desert (Matthew 4:5-8, Luke 4:5-9), how can you say that Jesus was without sin? 141. Does your sect believe that the existence of your god can be established through a formal proof? Why or why not? 142. Pick a famous argument for the existence of your god, then criticize that argument. (Assume I mean for you to use the academic definition of criticize). 143. Pick an argument against the existence of your god. If it is not a famous argument, copy it down here. Criticize this argument. (Assume I mean for you to use the academic definition of the word criticize). 144. What does your sect think of the government? Read Paul's letter to the Romans, chapter 13. Now what do you think of the government? If necessary, reconcile the two views. 145. What is your definition of the word Christian? 146. Why do you think it is that the ancient Greeks, who had a very liberal sexual morality, had many fewer sex crimes (compared to the population) than the United States, which is 85% Christian? 147. If someone accepts Jesus, and is "saved," but then turns away from Jesus, is that person still saved? 148. Where did your god come from? 149. What are the requirements for being saved? Some sects says that faith alone is enough; others say that faith without works is dead. The Bible supports both these viewpoints. What does your sect think? 150. If I decide I like the answers to the above questions, where can I get in touch with you? (Give name, address, phone and email if available). 151. What is the name of your sect? 152. How is your sect organized? 153. How can I get in touch with a priest (minister, etc.) of your sect?

What am I talking about, you might ask good reader? Halloween. Yes, it is not for another month but already the christian propaganda is flying. http://home.computer.net/~cya/cy00061.htmlhome.computer.net/~cya/cy00061.html The link above is a christian propaganda site condemning the holiday as evil etc, etc etc. Good readers, I did a rant on this last year (Titled Halloween) that covers everything this site says and more. The person who wrote this article obliviously didn't do much research on the subject before posting, opting to remain "in the dark" for the most part and only posting things that helped the christian point of view that Halloween is evil and of the "devil". If you wish to educate yourself then please read my previous Halloween rant. I think it will help. September 12 Back for a bit.Well, after a long slumber I have returned. I have returned to you, good reader, so that I might help you in the fight against close-mindedness in the form of the worlds religions. Today we focus on the christian god. I have compiled a few reasons as to why such a being cannot exist. Now, this is not presented as a proof of any god. You cannot prove or disprove god, but the christian god on the other hand, is very easy to show to be impossible, as most christians define this god. In order for us to do this we would have to be all knowing, having nothing hidden to us in our knowledge of the universe and life. For if there is one tiny thing we do not know, then there within this tiny thing, exists the possibility that god or what ever "could" exist. I disagree. Defining the christian god:
1. Perfect in every way: Omni-max: All knowing: By looking at this one trait we can show how it contradicts the other "ALL" traits, and show this god is impossible. A Perfect Book: My conclusion:
April 09 My broken maskWell, not what you are thinking really. I got an email from a guy I use to work with who actually reads these little rants and he wanted to know why I have such disbelief and "anger and resentment" towards the Christian faith. I started to send an email to argue with him but then I thought about it and yes I do have a lot of anger and resentment towards the Christian faith. Now to the question as to "why"; I guess it could be answered simply by saying I had been lied to. Let me explain. I've enjoyed debates, discussions, and "arguments" about religion. It has never been my specific intention to diminish the faith of those with whom I discuss it. Any increase in knowledge and understanding is a “good” thing, and a successful argument can only serve to broaden, define, and bolster one’s beliefs. Any type of blind faith is a bad thing. The thoughts, problems, conclusions, faults, and arguments that follow are the foundation stones of my lack of belief. All Bible verses are quoted from the King James Version. I. If a “loving god” exists, why is there so much pain, suffering, and “evil” in the world? Two presumptions of Christianity are that: 1. Their god is omnipotent, and 2. Their god is omniscient. It is a fact that tens of thousands of defenseless children and infants die each day from starvation or horrible diseases. Continually, children are victims of kidnapping, rape, torture, and murder by pedophiles. How could an omnipotent, omniscient god allow these innocent human beings to suffer so? Either: 1. Their god is unable to stop or control these events. If so, he’s not omnipotent, and therefore isn’t worthy of worship. Or, 2. Their god could, but chooses not to stop or control these events. If this is so, such a callous, uncaring and indifferent god isn’t worthy of worship. Or, 3. Their god doesn’t exist and is solely the mythical creation of ancient men who sought to both explain the unknown and to establish control over the actions of other men. Explanations that the ways of god are just too mysterious for us mortals to understand are insufficient. There can be no possible moral justification for such meaningless, purposeless, and “evil” acts. II. Miracles, by definition, contradict science. The “evidence” for biblical miracles comes solely from the bible. The existence of miracles defies rationality. Apparently, god thought it necessary for Jesus to perform miracles to convince others. But merely reading about a supposed miracle that happened 2,000 years ago is far less convincing that witnessing one yourself. Why were miracles necessary then, but not necessary now? It's all too commonly said, "It's a miracle!" The few who survived the WTC attacks lived because "it was a miracle". Were the 2700+ who perished unworthy in some way? It's a "miracle" that so many churches survived the tsunami in Southeast Asia in December 2004. Why isn't it a "miracle" that the tsunami killed over a quarter of a million people? Why do religious "visions" always appear in the "correct" religious context? Catholics see the Virgin Mary on a tortilla, Muslims see Muhammad on a sand dune. Why didn't Native Americans a thousand years ago see Jesus Christ? III. If god created the universe, why does the persuasive evidence of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution accounts for life?Is there any justification, other than “faith”, for a belief in creationism? If so, what observations or physical evidence can be presented? If the fossil record is not evidence of the evolution of life on this planet, then god either put it there to deceive us or trick us into believing something that isn't true. Why would he do such a thing? IV. If god is morally pure, how can he sanction and even order the slaughter of innocent children as the Old Testament says he did?The god of the Bible - is a hateful, arrogant, sexist, cruel being who can't tolerate criticism. I wouldn't want to live in the same neighborhood with such a creature! The biblical god is a macho male warrior. Though he said "Thou shalt not kill," he ordered death for all opposition, wholesale drowning and mass exterminations (How many infants and children were killed by god in the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah? How many infants and children were killed by god during the "Great" flood?); punishing offspring to the fourth generation (Ex. 20:5); ordering pregnant women and children to be ripped up (Hos. 13:16); demanding animal and human blood to appease his angry vanity; is partial to one race of people; judges women to be inferior to men; is a sadist who created a hell to torture unbelievers; created evil (Is. 45:7); discriminated against the handicapped (Lev. 21:18-23); ordered virgins to be kept as spoils of war (Num. 31:15-18, Deut. 21:11-14); spread dung on people's faces (Mal. 2:3); sent bears to devour 42 children who teased a prophet (II Kings 2:23-24); punished people with snakes, dogs, dragons, drunkenness, swords, arrows, axes, fire, famine, and infanticide; and said fathers should eat their sons (Ez. 5:10). Is that nice? Would you want to live next door to such a person? Here's another example, in 2 Samuel 24 when god moved David to take a census, then it turns out that it was sinful for David to have taken a census (even though god does not lead people to sin according to James 1:13), then god punishes David for this sinful act by killing 70,000 other people. 1 Chronicles 20 retells this story with Satan in the role of inciting David to sin by taking a census, thus revising the earlier version to get god off that hook. However, god still punishes David by killing 70,000 people whose only apparent crime was to have been among those David counted in his somehow sinful census. How about: 1 Sam. 15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. This was apparently done because their ancestors had done something to displease god several centuries earlier. V. If Jesus is the only way to heaven, then what about the billions of people who have never heard of Him?If you must accept Jesus as your Savior in order to be saved, what about the billions of beings that are born and raised to believe OTHER religions? Surely, God couldn’t believe that ALL children born and raised their entire lives as Moslems, with no impartial or unbiased exposure to Christianity have any realistic chance of being converted. VI. If god cares about the people he created, how could he consign so many of them to an eternity of torture in hell just because they didn’t believe the right things about him?If you must accept Jesus as your Savior in order to be saved, what about the billions of beings that die as fetuses, infants, and who are mentally deficient? It would be impossible for them to accept Jesus. So are they are condemned to spend eternity in hell because of conditions over which they had no control? Deu32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a god of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. This verse says god is just, but where is the justice? For justice to exist, the punishment must fit the crime. No matter how many “sins” or bad deeds one commits in this world, there must be a reasonable limit for an appropriate punishment. A sentence of eternal punishment in hell is incomprehensible. Why are there so many religions that all proclaim to be the correct and only true religion? Could you – personally – hold someone’s hand over the flame of a gas stove while they writhed and cried out in agony? Could you hold it there FOREVER??? We find it repugnant that Hitler persecuted, tortured, and killed Jews like Anne Frank. But god, because Anne Frank did not accept Jesus as her savior, will hold Anne Frank over the flame FOREVER. VII. If god is the ultimate overseer of the church, why has it been rife with hypocrisy and brutality throughout the ages? The Crusades? The Inquisition? The Salem Witch Trials? The near extermination of Native Americans? Adolph Hitler’s claim to be a Christian and that his extermination of the Jews and others was morally correct? VIII. Why are the morals espoused in the bible so suspect? There are MANY “shall not’s” concerning sexual relations between a man and his female relatives, but nowhere in the bible is pedophilia prohibited. Nowhere in the Bible is rape specifically prohibited. On the contrary: Deu22:28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; Deu22:29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. These verses seem to me to indicate that rape (of a virgin) is “OK” as long as the rapist pays the girl’s father and then marries her (unless they aren’t “found” and then it’s not a problem – the rapist gets off scot-free). -OR- Num31:15 And Moses said unto them, have ye saved all the women alive? Num31:16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD. Num31:17 now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. Num31:18 but all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. The implication here is that they’d be kept as sex-slaves, but even if they were only to be kept as "regular" slaves; it’s still ridiculous from a moral point of view. “Thou shalt not rape,” seems to me a reasonable and desirable, if not mandatory, commandment – certainly much more so than: Exo23:19 the first of the fruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy god. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk. The morally repugnant concepts of original sin, depravity, substitution forgiveness, intolerance, eternal punishment, and humble worship are all beneath the dignity of intelligent human beings and conflict with the values of kindness and reason. They are barbaric ideas for primitive cultures cowering in fear and ignorance. IX. Why does the concept of prayer raise so many problems?Didn't the six million Jews who perished in Hitler's concentration camps pray? Why did god ignore them? Why Pray? If it changes god's mind then he is not sovereign. If it does not change god's mind then it is superfluous. X. Why does god demand that we love and worship him?Either love the Christian god or you'll be punished. How can it be a true love when it's a contingent love? Aren't love and respect earned? XI. Why do some of the beliefs and teachings of Jesus seem so questionable?Jesus is a chip off the old block. He said, "I and my father are one," and he upheld the Old Testament law. Mt. 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. He preached the same old judgment: vengeance and death, wrath and distress, hell and torture for all nonconformists. He believed in demons, angels and spirits. He never denounced the subjugation of slaves or women. Women were excluded as disciples and as guests at his heavenly table. Except for hell he introduced nothing new to ethics or philosophy. He was disrespectful of his mother and brothers; he said we should hate our parents and desert our families. Mt. 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. Lk. 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. So much for "christian family values." Jesus denounced anger: Mt. 5:22 But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. But was often angry himself: Mk. 3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other. He called people "fools": Mt. 23:17 ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? Mt. 23:19 ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Jesus called people "serpents": Mt. 23:33 ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Though he warned that such language puts you in danger of hellfire (Mt. 5:22). He said: Mt. 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. So much for "Peace on Earth." He irrationally cursed and withered a fig tree for being barren out of season: Mt. 21:19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away. He mandated burning unbelievers: Jn. 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. The Church has complied with relish. He stole a horse: Lk. 19:30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither. 31 And if any man ask you, why do ye loose him? Thus shall ye say unto him, because the Lord hath need of him. 32 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. 33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, why loose ye the colt? 34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him. 35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. He told people to cut off hands, feet, eyes and sexual organs. Mt. 5:29 and if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Mt. 19:12 for there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. You want me to accept Jesus, but I think I'll pick my own friends, thank you. XII. If the bible is “god’s word” why are there so many real or apparent contradictions? Why would god allow so many translational problems? Why wouldn’t he make the bible a simple, clear, easily-understandable book to reach ALL people without introducing suspicion and uncertainty? Why has god given us real, physical evidence for an earth more than 4 billion years old and for the existence of evolution? Was his intent to deliberately mislead us? The biblical account of Noah and the ark presents many grave problems for me: 1. A boat of the stated size, made strictly of wood, could not support its own weight, much less the weight of the animals and supplies to be added to it. 2. There is no physical, scientific evidence of a worldwide flood with floodwaters covering all the highest mountain peaks. 3. All the water of the earth, including ice-caps, is, by far, insufficient to cover all the land-masses. Where did all this additional water come from? Where did it go? 4. Disregarding the conflicting references to the number of “clean” animals loaded aboard the ark, two animals of each species could not possibly fit in the space defined by the dimensions of the ark. 5. How could Noah (even with the help of his family members) gather up a male and female of all 500,000+ species of beetles, when even entomologists with microscopes often find it impossible to differentiate the sexes (not to mention all the other species of insects, birds, mammals, reptiles, marsupials, and invertebrates)? 6. Even if they COULD have been gathered and sexed, how much time would it take to load each pair of animals aboard the ark, find a place for them, and provide for the varied and diverse physical and environmental needs of each species? 7. What did all the carnivorous animals eat in the days and weeks after they left the ark and before their prey animals had reproduced? 8. How was a viable population established for all those different species of animals with only a single breeding pair of each to provide a genetic base? 9. What is the explanation for the geographical isolation of many species of animals (and plants)? For example, why are kangaroos only found in Australia, and why were tomatoes and potatoes only native to the Americas? 10. I find it impossible to believe that out of all the people on the face of the earth at that time, ALL were unworthy of God’s grace except Noah and his family. ALL were killed by the flood. ALL presumably went to hell for eternity. 11. Why were all but a pair of each of the animals destroyed? Had they all become wicked and evil too? This story is too similar to prior “flood myths” that originated in other cultures. Its ludicrous impossibility casts aspersions on the validity and truth of ALL the stories in the Bible. Are people saved by “faith”? Mark16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. -AND- John3:16 for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. -AND- Eph2:8 for by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of god: Eph2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Or are people saved by their deeds (works)? Mat16:27 for the son of man shall come in the glory of his father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. -AND- Mat19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? Mat19:17 and he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one that is, god: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. Mat19:18 He saith unto him, which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Mat19:19 Honor thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. -AND- Jas2:24 ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. If children are not responsible for the sins of their fathers: Deu24:16 the fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin. If the bible says that children will not be punished for the sins of their parents, then why are all of us held responsible for the sins of Adam and Eve (original sin)? Furthermore, if god really created Adam not knowing either good or evil: Gen 3:22 And the LORD god said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Then, how could such a harsh and enduring punishment as death for Adam and all his descendants possibly be just? Prior to Adam and Eve eating the fruit of the "tree of knowledge", they would have been unable to differentiate between right and wrong. God's admonition that they were not allowed to eat that fruit would, therefore, have been meaningless to them in any "right/wrong" context. They would have been like an untrained puppy that’s told by a master, "Don't pee on the rug!" Given the puppy's inability to comprehend the "wrongness" of peeing on the rug, it's ludicrous for the master to "blame" the puppy for "sinning". Our secular courts are more just than god when they show mercy on people who cannot distinguish between right and wrong, such as children and the mentally handicapped. And why isn't this doctrine of original sin found anywhere in the bible except in Paul's writings? Why didn't Jesus ever mention it, or teach it? The sun was stopped in its track for an entire day? Josh10:12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. Josh10:13 and the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. For this to have occurred, the rotation of the earth would have to have stopped and then restarted. Even if a miracle caused this phenomenon, why did no other peoples of the earth (many of whom were quite astronomically oriented) make a record of it? Many biblical individuals are claimed to have lived several centuries – some over 900 years. If man was created with such life-spans, why didn’t other cultures include records, legends, or stories of long-lived individuals? (Though there are some cultures that claim ancient kings lived tens of thousands of years, this is so obviously bogus that it couldn’t have happened and couldn’t have been derived from the stories in Genesis.) A prophesy: Isa7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. But only two other verses in the bible contain the names “Immanuel” or “Emmanuel”: Isa8:7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks: Isa8:8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel. -AND- [An angel of the Lord, appearing to Joseph in a dream]: Mat1:21 and she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Mat1:22 now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Mat1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. [This is apparently a re-statement of the prophesy.] Why is Jesus never referred to in the New Testament as “Immanuel”? Which verse is correct? 2Chr36:9 Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD. -OR- 2Ki24:8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. And his mother's name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. There are MANY other contradictory verses in the bible. This seems odd for a work that was “divinely inspired” or “the infallible word of god”. If the errors are attributed to copyists, then the entire bible is suspect. Who’s to say which portions were copied correctly and which weren’t? The prose of biblical apologists is rife with "probably", "possibly", "maybe", "perhaps", "may have", "may not have", "could be", and "may be". Did god intend that his word be misunderstood? Did he want us to be confused? Why are women denigrated?: 1Tim2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 1Tim2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority While slavery might have been “accepted” during both Old and New Testament times, we now know that slavery is WRONG. Aren’t moral absolutes eternal? As Jesus was dying on the cross, he cried out: Mark15:34 and at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, El oi, El oi, lama sabachthani? Which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Also, the Hebrew word for god is not EL, in fact El was a minor deity in the religious thought and praxis of Ugarit. Why would he feel that God, his father, had forsaken him? Wouldn’t he have known he was NOT forsaken, even if his father turned his back so that he did not have to watch his only son die? Wouldn’t he have been able to “control” any amount of physical pain? Didn’t he know he would rise from the dead? Why would he call out to a pagan god and not his “father”? Excluding the works of biased Christian authors, there isn’t one writing outside the bible in all of ancient history that clearly refers to the existence or miracles of Jesus of Nazareth. Those that are purported to only refer to the stories and myths surrounding Jesus or the Christ. And they were written well after the fact. This prophesy of Jesus: Mat16:28 Verily I say unto you, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. This prophesy did not seem to come true, did it? Though the men standing there are long dead, aren’t we still waiting for the second coming? XIII. Why did no contemporary writers chronicle the acts and life of Jesus? Here we have a "great and wondrous" teacher who, over a period of about three years, drew tens of thousands of followers and listeners from many nations, who worked many remarkable miracles, yet no one wrote about him at the time. Not a word. Not a jot or a tittle. How likely is it that Herod could have killed all the infant boys in a town and not one of his enemies and detractors (who carefully chronicled his many crimes, even quite trivial ones) would have even hinted at this one? *** The “perfect word of god” contains so many atrocities, inaccuracies, errors, contradictions, and absurdities, that it’s rendered totally unbelievable. The ineffective arguments of apologists that some verses should be taken figuratively and others literally raises the obvious question of which verses throughout the bible are literally true? One would expect an actual “word of god” to be clear, accurate, and timeless. The bible is none of these. Since there are no irrefutable or even reasonable proofs of the existence of the Christian god, I am left with my lack of belief and my anger at being lied too. And that about sums it up. Hope this clears it up for ya, Scotty my boy. April 08 QuotesHere are some quotes a good friend of mine (Fiction Alchemist) gave me.
April 06 These people should be shot. This is old news and I wanted to post this when it first happened but I've been busy. Anyway Christians are protesting at soldiers funerals. Soldiers who died in Iraq. Why? Well the answer is simple, to protest the fact that these families are morning the deaths of their children/brothers/husbands because they fought in a military that supports homosexuality. Some of the protesters even went as far to say that the reason these soldiers have died is because their god hates gays. Simple right? What is wrong with these people? This is why I belittle and put down this religion and no other religion (mostly). This is just stupid and rude and extremely sad. These protesters are not people, they are monsters! They are not even life forms that I will recognize. You can hate gays, you can hate the war in Iraq, shit hate Bush and all that but these families have the right to mourn the passing of their loved ones like everyone else. This is where the "freedom of speech" should have a line and if there ever was a line, these religious fools crossed it. Extremely sad and I absolutely hate these people. I really wish I could meet one in person, then we could have fun by playing "Bang your head", in which I play basketball with their skull. January 06 Looney Pat is at it again...That’s right folks, Pat Robertson is back and now he is condemning his old friends! This crazy fool has said that Israeli Prime Minister Sharon's current stroke is all apart of his god's wrath on him for pulling out of Gaza, which Pat just coincidently apposed. So, it would seem that anyone who disagrees with this loony is going to be smitten by his "all powerful" god......... Wow. Now that is insane! "He was dividing God's land, and I would say, 'Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the [European Union], the United Nations or the United States of America,'" Said the crazy old fool Robertson on his zombie "700 Club" show on ABC family. This is what his spoke's woman said about Pat's recent madness: "What they're basically saying is, 'How dare Pat Robertson quote the Bible?'" "This is what the word of God says," Watts said "This is nothing new to the Christian community." Really? Wow. What a poor pathetic excuse for a human being. What a bunch of morons. I honestly can't believe this guy still has a T.V. show. With all the crazy he spews from that toxic dump of a mouth of his, I am very surprised that ABC family hasn't dropped his show. But wait, he gets a ton of mindless zombie viewers, which translates to $$$$ for ABC. They will take the money over the right thing any day. Very very sad. Well, sorry this is a late entry. I got other stuff on my plate for now and when it is in full swing I will tell ya all about it. December 22 be beack soonWell, I am still on vacation and it seems that not many idiotic things have been happening. I will update when I get back in 4-5 days. |
